Then there’s the “birther” thing...assuming it was just a way to delegitimize Hussein, rather than the likely truth, it was no different than when Republicans claimed Perot elected Clinton, which even tho debunked (see: https://spectator.org/63682_bushioisie-wrong-ross-perot-didnt-cost-ghw-bush-white-house-1992/ its existence seems to have been to protect the Bush name) wasn’t said to be racist! Democrats tried to delegitimize Reagan’s win with the Iran “October Surprise” bit! Or Dubya’s in 2000! Or even Bush I in 1988 by saying that the Horton ad was “racist,” rather than a strong commentary on liberal crime policies. In politics, you delegitimize others’ victories to save face and rally the troops.
