‘I Don’t Make Movies for Rich Liberal Elites’ - De Niro Defends Fed Arts Spending
MRC TV ^ | May 9, 2017 | Mark Judge

Yeah, he’s talkin’ to Trump...and you.

On Monday night during his speech accepting the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Chaplin Award, actor Robert De Niro blasted the Trump administration.

"I don't make movies for rich liberal elites,” De Niro said at the event, which took place at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theatre. “We make movies to entertain audiences. Audiences vote by seeing them; critics vote by writing about them; and then posterity takes its time to decide if they’re art - or not.”

He continued:

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately because of our government’s hostility towards art. The budget proposal, among its other draconian cuts to life-saving and life-enhancing programs, eliminates the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. For their own divisive political purposes, the administration suggests that the money for these all-inclusive programs goes to rich liberal elites. This is what they now call an ‘alternative fact,’ but I call it bullsh*t.

De Niro also noted that the namesake of his award, Charlie Chaplin, was "an immigrant who probably wouldn't pass today's 'extreme vetting,’" adding, "I hope we're not keeping out the next Chaplin."

Those at the event to praise De Niro were a who’s who of liberal Hollywood, including Sean Penn, Harvey Keitel, Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Stiller, Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas and Barry Levinson, and director Martin Scorsese, who has directed De Niro in eight films. Also in the audience were Michael Mann, Christopher Walken, John McEnroe, John Turturro, Marisa Tomei, Michael Barker, Avi Lerner, Katie Couric and Harvey Weinstein.

De Niro also praised his fellow stars, sarcastically describing some of them in words used in the tweets of President Trump.  “By being here tonight, you are supporting arts for everyone,” DeNiro said. “You’re supporting the slapstick of Charlie Chaplin, the great body of work of Marty Scorsese and Barry Levinson, the dumb-ass comedies of Robert De Niro, the ‘overrated performances of Meryl Streep’ and your own taste and needs.”

The government funded artists are hostile and deserve the rebuke they get.

Can’t put a nativity display (privately funded) on public property but taxpayers can be forced to pay for a gay man to put a crucifix in a jar of his urine.

Chaplin sided with the Communists. Stalin was a horrible man, murderous, despotic, and these shills still "holster" his schlong.

That Chaplin did and he also, like Al Capone,l played "games" re paying his taxes.

Chaplin was NOT the innovator that many claim he was. He STOLE many of the things he did and claimed as his own ( especially the "potato dance" ) from Stan Laurel and others who were STARS of the Brit Music Hall!

And then, there is the FACT that Charlie was a damned pedophile!

De Niro is stupid, uneducated, and his movies are NOT "art". Neither is the vast majority of the crap that is funded by the government, which De Niro's stuff isn't.

There is no place for government funded “art”. Plenty of private sources.

He’s full of (you guessed it)__it! Charlie Chaplin did not get a government grant to do the ‘Potato Dance’. Hey Robert, I’ve got news for you: It’s Not Your money! The Kennedy Center is a bully pulpit for those who hate the Judeo-Christian world view. It is subsidized so rich folks can dress up in Tuxedos and gowns and look in the mirror.

Art is for those who can appreciate it. It shouldn’t be funded by people forced to pay taxes by the government.

What a dumb ass comparison. Chaplin emigrated from England in 1910, the hotbed of world terrorism . Typical hysterical, liberal, talking-points no-nothing. Sure Bobby, we're keeping out the next Islamofacist superstar. Shut up and do a sequel of Casino, because your recent movies just suck. Meet The Parents plus worse sequel? Last Vegas? Intern? Joy?

DeNiro just doesn’t get it.

We are not against art,we are against being forced to pay for art and/or artists.

Straw man argument, stupid. We argue that you rich liberals should be funding these art programs through donations - not the taxpayers. Put you money where your overly large mouth is for once.

How would De Niro react if Trump, rather than cancelling arts funding, used it to support and praise himself? Imagine Ken Burns having to decide between starvation and a 25 hour documentary extolling the infinite virtues of Donald Trump.

The interesting thing is that if you go to the websites of these lefties who “represent everyone”, there is no “Contact” link. They don’t want to hear from We the People.

Their idea of audience is a group of sheeple whose viewpoints they honestly believe is theirs to mold.

Guess again!

If the government needs to fund the arts, it is because they are not self-supporting. They cannot attract enough paying patrons to survive.

No more government funding for the arts. Let them be accountable to We the People.

“....our government’s hostility towards art”

OY!

C’mon, you’d think this guy would have learned to script this a little better unless his intention is to lose half the audience in the first 5 minutes.
