Officer James Givens has served with the Cincinnati Police Department for over 26 years, but has never quite experienced anything like this before. He was sitting in his patrol car in a parking lot when he got an unexpected visitor. A goose came up to his car and started pecking on the side of it. He threw food out for her, thinking thats what she wanted, but she didnt take it.

As ridiculous as this story might seem, it is quite possible. Ive spent a lot of time with both domestic and wild geese and can tell you that they are definitely much smarter than most other birds. How much is innate ability versus learned due to their relatively long lives Im not sure. Domestic and wild urban dwelling geese absolutely know we humans have, well, its hard to know exactly how they understand us but, they know we have “powers” or special abilities. Even the ones that don’t have the personality traits, and they do develope individual personalities, to normally interact with people do learn from watching humans and those that have flock peers that interact with humans learn that much more quickly. Weather this officer had interacted with them or other officers regularly park their I cant say, I do know that geese absolutely understand that those big shiny boxes that move around contain humans. She may have actually knocked on other cars looking for assistance if she is an mature goose who has had a great deal of human interaction and just kept it up until someone had enough time and interest to investigate.
I hate teases like that too. I immediately cut to FR for the facts. What did he see? I don’t feel like reading the article to find out.
> What did he see? <
Fair question. And on second thought, I should have included this in my post #1:
The mother goose lead the cop to one of her goslings. The gosling was all angled up in a balloon string. The cop untangled the gosling as the mother goose patiently watched.
By the way, nice pictures of this at the link.
Well, looking at the “Grits Line” map, southern Ohio is within it and northern Virginia isn’t, so I suppose based upon that, they’re southern in spirit and dietary preferences even if they’re above the Mason-Dixon Line, while NoVa no longer is despite being below it.
That is on Mill Creek, which runs parallel to I-75. Somewhere between Mitchell Avenue and I-74 interchange.
Chickens and pigs will really screw up your property if allowed to overpopulate and roam freely also. Pigeons and geese are food. Only in America do we piss and moan about having so much food that it has become a nuisance. Capitalise on the opportunity and be grateful or make sure that the laws are such that your rural kin can take care of the problem for you.
I’m very well acquainted with “assimilated” southern Jews who have been here just as long as most anybody else and other than going to Temple and maybe dietary restrictions if they keep Kosher you’d never know, they can be as redneck as any other good old boy. Now, the NYC ones, there it gets weird at times. I think they buy into the SPLC thing so much that they’re paranoid and loaded for bear before they ever get here, and go looking for confirmation of their biases. If you look hard enough for something, you’re going to find it eventually.
Many geese do have one hell of a mean streak but wild geese dont have the physical capabilities of domestc geese. Youre lucky you met that one, there is a strain of giant dewlap toulouse that Ive raised that can actually nip little plugs out.
The Canada Goose. Coming to poop near you soon!
Thanks. Blog sites are blocked by the firewall at work, so I couldn’t read the article.
***We tend to assume that we are the only brilliant things out there and that everything other than us is stupid because we don’t understand their language.***
I couldn’t help but think of the condescending elitist attitude of the Uniparty when I read your post. I know this thread isn’t about politics, so forgive me for venturing back to it.
Maybe your mood will improve if you watch this video of a guy trolling a squirrel. Stupid squirrel:
The advanced animals are terrific, as is the entirety of creation. But we are the pinnacle of creation.

Yet humans struggled for survival, and only one species of human remains.
Have you ever eaten one of these? It ain’t the Christmas goose. I am sure if you can find somebody that knows the trick to preparing these they could be ok, but the same could go for coons. But if hunting these things was better in my area I’d love to shoot them and of course I would eat them.
sky carp
I can’t wait to nonchalantly toss that one into a conversation!
They make great guard animals.
“These”? None from the Eastern flyway but a great many central flyway and likely some of the nonmigratories. Ive enjoyed evey bit of each one. I was once told of poor flavored geese by another Freeper and was rather convinced that he wasnt cleaning them quickly enough. I dont have any special techniques that Im aware of. I do know that I dont like any waterfowl cooked “the right way”. Youll find a number of sources saying things like 500 degrees for an hour or some such but I dont do that. Those recipes dont crisp the skin properly, dont render the subcutaneous fat properly, and overall leave the carcass inconvenient to break down while eating as the joints and connective tissues are still solid. Well pricked, uncovered, lower and slower is much better.
In fairness to Mr. Michaels, he - on the ground in the vicinity of Cincinnati - might well have been very attracted to the KY side of the river, as far as that went. Anyone would, if they could get a 10% better deal on a house. It was what it would look like to his friends and relatives that was the issue. After working in Cincinnati for a number of years, he accepted an offer in California - I think San Francisco - because the pay was so much better.
