My purpose here is not to defend the book.
But, if you read it, you'll find mechanics have some success getting older cars without all the electronics to run.
The family of Matherson's late wife are small-scale car collectors who happen to own a 1959 Edsel, in addition to a Mustang. The two cars are so old that the EMP did not affect them because they have no modern EMP-sensitive electronics, such as transistors. Another local resident owns a vintage airplane that later becomes very useful, as it too is so old that it has no vulnerable electronics.
Source.

Told someone earlier today I bet people in London and Paris never thought panzers would be driving into Poland either.
Sometimes the talk gets to heated there's only one thing left to do.
In a dictatorship, the Little Urchin can't back down. It would be a sign of weakness and a possible excuse for a coup.
That's the ideal scenario.

True...but I wonder how well maintained their subs are.

North Korea can scream and yell and threaten and bluster all they want. Go right ahead.
But if they should DO something stupid, like accidentally hit Guam with even an unarmed missile, or do a full dress-rehearsal missile with warhead test in the middle of the Pacific, then boom, boom, out go the lights.

I’m sure ol’ ‘Jonesy’ already has the sonic signature recorded and categorized, for the next trip out of the barn.

"For greatest effect, time the nukes with the eclipse." That maybe exactly what they're planning.

“There is no way a diesel powered sub could sneak past any US ship. Diesel engines are very loud and can be heard from miles away. The second one is detected in SK waters it would be depth charged into oblivion.”
I don’t know about that, There’s no way a USN destroyer can have a high seas collision with a Phillipino freighter. But they did. 8 years of Obama effing up the military apparently worked wonders.

I want to hug you right now.
I’ve been worrying needlessly, apparently. I guess the volumes of bottled water I have accumulated are essentially worthless at thus point ... may help in the earthquake.

What is the underwater range of those silent subs before they have to be recharged by noisy diesels? I doubt they could cross the Pacific without surfacing a few times.

We imposed a very credible blockade on Imperial Japan with submarines that were even more primitive than those Soviet Romeos. The same can be said for the German Kreigsmarine and Britain.

(You cannot invade the mainland US. There'd be a rifle behind every blade of grass.)
