The retail landscape looks like it's about to get rougher for everyone — especially those on the lowest rung of the ladder.
Retail is the largest employer in the US, employing an estimated 4.6 million people in full- or part-time jobs.
But estimates also say that the sector has shed more than 89,000 jobs in general merchandise stores alone between last October and May of this year. At last count, over 6,375 stores have been announced for across the country this year.
It's this shedding of jobs that's about to create what retail-industry consultant Doug Stephens is calling a "retail refugee crisis" in an article in Business of Fashion....

Not to mention the amount of money you can save ordering online. I can’t tell you the amount of money we have saved on car parts, key fobs, etc. vs going to the local Auto Zone or other chain parts store.
For example, my son needed new headlight assemblies for his car. One was around $150 without the bulb. That was the cheapest we could find locally. We ordered the same headlight assemblies with bulbs, for $80 for both. All we had to do was wait a few days.

My experience was the opposite. A few years ago I wanted to by a lawn mower, and looked online. Walmart had one, and other suppliers as well, but the choice of actual lawn mower seemed to me to be limited.
I actually went to our local Walmart Superstore, and looked around and didn’t see one. I asked an employee on the floor, and she DIDN’T KNOW WHAT A LAWN MOWER WAS! Honest to God.
I went to Menard’s and they had a really beautiful lawn mower display, chest high with tilted lawn mowers on it, you know, maybe a dozen different kinds, most of which I hadn’t seen on the internet! The internet is evidently dominated by high level corporate deals, locking out many brands ... just an observation.
I bought a “Brute”, because it satisfied my eye, and I’ve been happy with it. They do have a website, if you look up “Brute”.

What I find most often is not related to how far you drive but that you can drive all over town and not find what you want but it IS on Amazon. Their inventory is just humongous.

Marauding black teens with their organized group thefts and group “fronting” other gangs have had a huge impact. Christian adults don’t want to see it and certainly don’t want their children exposed. This “keeping it real” behavior has probably impacted theatre attendance as well.

I still do that, maybe because I am a masochist, but all the odd screws, bolts, nuts,and parts I could buy from a local hardware store less than a mile from my house I now have to buy Online and wait.

I don’t need much that can’t be found at Walmart but once a year or three something else is needed and the internet comes in handy.
It was the price of gas that made me want to stay home to shop. It wasn’t hard to predict what has happened.
I understand, but for me the nearest Walmart is also 160 miles away.

I remember it from Heartbreak Ridge, which many marines here didn’t like, but as a civi I loved.
I regularly buy electronic parts from China.
Recently I ordered a small bag of 10 items called DC-DC switchers. 3-5v in and 1.5 - 40 v out adjustable. 90+ percent efficiency.
It cost me less than 5 dollars and included shipping.
Even if some kind of local store had such an obscure item they would have cost 30 dollars each or more.
You can buy nearly anything direct from China with similar savings...people make a good income by buying in-demand items from China and selling locally on internet sales lists like Craigslist.
I am about to try selling/renting medical equipment locally that I have purchased from China.... I used to repair medical electronics for some free clinics so it’s a low-risk venture for me and something that I know.

For years, my typical experience unless I’m buying groceries or building supplies. Therefore I long ago fave up trying to buy anything in actual stores except groceries and building supplies and instead buy everything else online.

occasionally buy stuff directly from aliexpress express.
have had pretty good luck overall.
That happened five years ago.
