“Wealth” in this case ( I believe ) translates to a “high roller”. That is, he dealt in wealth but with great risk. This is in fact a syndrome ... “doubling down” ... You keep raising the stakes, so you can exhibit the apparent fruits of wealth at increasing levels until your obligations catch up with you. It’s an old story, and I surmise that it is the story in this case, as I’ve posted earlier.
