It is a pretty insane video. The shooter should consider himself very lucky that things didn’t end any worse than it already did.
The slow motion clip makes the video all the more frightening and crazy. I’m still not sure what caused it, and we don’t want to speculate on anything without knowing details. All we know is that things like this happen, and when they do, you just hope the injuries are something that can be fixed. See the slow motion muzzleload explosion here.

That’s not a Muzzle Loader.
That doesn’t look like a ‘muzzle loader’...................
Having done this with a shotgun, dirt/mud in the end of the barrel, with a similar result, this one happened at the shooter end of the barrel. This tells me the barrel was blocked by a previous load or too much powder.
My guess is a previously loaded charge.
Professional publication and American Shooting Journal are two things I would not use in a sentence together. Well, except for the previous sentence...

No wonder it exploded! /s
Shooter shouldn’t have tried to force the powder and load down the barrel like a muzzle loader.
its a muzzle loader - looks to be a Remington
There are bolt-action muzzleloaders.
The bolt only loads and ignites an inline shotshell primer.
In-Line muzzloaders have a “bolt” like handle to access the primer nipple but it is still a muzzleloader.
Well, after the explosion it’s a ‘muzzle loader’....................
or used smokeless powder instead of BP or 777

Primitive weapons hunting season allows for the use of bow-and-arrow and muzzleloaders, and extends deer season.
Besides traditional rifles, there are “in-line” muzzleloaders which resemble bolt action rifles except for the way they are loaded. Look for a ramrod under the barrel.
I did not see a ramrod in that video but yes, one way to blow up a barrel is to load a charge down the muzzle while forgetting there is already one in the barrel. Kaboom!
Some in-line muzzleloaders have bolts, but mine is break-action. Here’s a good summary of in-line muzzleloaders and supplies, for anyone interested.

My brother-in-law almost killed himself when the barrel of his was blocked by a previous load. It certainly screwed up the rifle....LOL!
