To Understand Trump Talk, You Must Speak Outer Borough
The Federalist ^ | 1/8/18 | David Marcus

Posted on 01/08/2018 1:36:06 PM PST by Duke C.

Appearing on Fox News last week, actor Scott Baio explained a very important fact about President Trump’s rhetorical style. In responding to attacks on the president’s tone and and general fitness for office, Baio had this to say: “I’m going to help the media right now, okay, I’m going to try to help them…It’s not going to go anywhere, but I’m going to try to help them because they’ve called the president, the president has dementia, he’s and idiot, he’s not mature…I’m from Brooklyn, President Trump is from Queens. This is what we do. We mess with people. That’s it.”

I’m a Southerner of many generations and I get it.

Really ?

LOL...I grew up in family who used that term, so I come by it rightly and we are all from NYC ( Manhattan ).

Perhaps it's a generational thing and something you let go of, but I didn't ?

Now you have wondering just WHERE that term came from, to begin with.

Ah ha...just looked it up and found out that the cartoonist, Al Capp originated the term. :-)

So I guess that my family got it from his comics, which I also read as a little kid and loved!

I have NEVER heard Trump's accent, before he threw in his hat, for the primary, and because it was SO strange to me, have paid a great deal of attention to it.

I'm very surprised that you hadn't heard Trump's accent before, being so familiar with NYC and environs. It's not as if he hasn't been a highly public figure for more than three decades.

How did he evade your detection?

Of course she did; however, in Ct. but on Long Island Sound, which is sort of opposite Locust Valley!

So just which part of the country/which state this accent originated in, it crossed over to the other, at some long ago point in time. But nonetheless, it was and still IS called LOCUST VALLEY LOCKJAW, because the spoken word is kinda spoken through almost clenched teeth.

WOW...great but very sad story!

My grandfather was a HUGE Giants fan, so was my mother, and so was I. I have VERY fond memories of listening to games on the radio and then watching them on T.V.! I cried, walking home from school, when the kids were all talking about the Giants leaving NYC, for California. That's how I found out they were moving and it really upset everyone I knew.

I’m midwest my whole life. Never even been to NYC. And I have “gotten” him ever since he announced.

People are really stupid.

Oh I've known WHO he was, but never heard him before.

Yes, yes, I do know that he's been on T.V. for decades, on different shows as well as his own, but I NEVER watched any of them.

And there were and are still several thousands of different NYC accents. I never claimed to know ALL of them. :-)

“and I am not being melodramatic when I say that his election to the presidency saved us from destruction.”

I live in a very liberal part of the country. Everyone around us was laughing at Trump, “no way can he get elected”. Even my wife didn’t think he had a chance. But I tried to explain that you don’t get HUGE audiences at your rallies just because you are some billionaire “entertainer”. I was hopeful, but also was not convinced that he would get elected - so it really was unbelievable when it came down to the very end. What a night! We dodged a bullet - but there is still so much to be done.

My wife was from NJ, and I lived there for 8 years in the 1980’s - so Trump was often in the news. Neither one of us cared for him back then either (we were both raised with more humble mid-western attitudes).

But if you get beyond the “attitude” and some of the quips from his TV days and speeches - he really did speak to the ideas of straight-talk, integrity, hard work, freedom and no BS politics that is the heart of fly-over country.

The issue isn't that he speaks rough. It's that he speaks like a child.

Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. —Matthew 18:2-4

Ah, thanks. I appreciate it. :-)

It's nice compared to the arguments and fights some folks want to start on FR.
