Hate to say but I would feel better about him had he simply been off campus. Knowing he waited outside while children were being killed...ugh.

I just can’t imagine doing that myself. I’d have to try to do something or else I’d never be able to live with myself again.

And to think, the great Sheriff mentioned not a word of this last night at the CNN Town Hall, while the crowd was whipped into a fury, even threatening the life of Dana Loesch.

Like what, he did not know this last night?

I asked this question the second day when it came out there was an armed resource officer at the school. Didn’t the Sheriff?

IMHO, that officer was told to stand down.

This whole incident reeks of being a false flag operation, even Stevie Wonder could see it.

I can agree with you that more needed/needs to be done in a preventative manner but, as an educator on a campus, I want to be able to protect myself/students instead of cowering in a corner of a room and praying the shooter doesn't find me/us.

So how would that work? I live in Missouri, Second Amendment state. No permit is needed to conceal carry. No training is needed. Anyone older than 19 can conceal carry. Would teachers need to be trained, even though they didn't need training before? Would students be able to carry if they were older than 19? Would the school administration need to be informed if a teacher carries? Would the other teachers have to be informed who is carrying and who is not? You cannot conceal carry in sports stadiums; would that mean the armed teacher couldn't go to high school games? In the event of an event where the teacher is forced to fire at someone; should they hit a bystander then who is liable, the teacher or the school? Who determines the competency of the teacher to keep a weapon in school? After all, if a trained police officer in Minneapolis can panic and shoot an unarmed woman then why should we expect better results from untrained or partly trained teachers? How do we prevent the teacher who emotionally or temperamentally unsuited for the responsibility from being given it? How do you determine their suitability to begin with? How do you ensure they retain their proficiency? How often to they have to re-certify, in a state where they aren't required to certify in the first place?

You may believe you are capable of filling the role you describe. I don't have any reason to doubt you but what about everybody else? I may be an excellent driver, I believe I am, but it's not me I watch out for. It's the other idiots on the road.

And yet those that pass a test get to drive whether they're very good at it or not.

Because of who I work with, I am required to have extra training---how to avoid it or how to restrain a student. This would just be more training.

The personal liability would occur if a CC teacher didn't have the training.

We need to take back our schools from the people who are too afraid to defend themselves. Our district is filled with tons of administrators that want to bury everything so there's no problems while we have a huge problem with violent kids and staff getting hurt.

But at least they have to show some level of competency to drive. You don't need to do that to conceal carry in Missouri.

The personal liability would occur if a CC teacher didn't have the training.

If a student is killed or injured by an errant shot from a teacher then there will be liability, training or no. Who carries it?

Okay, so let's just not defend ourselves. Is that what you want me to say?

I want the option to save myself and others if fired upon. You get trained and do your best to save lives. You want to sue me, go ahead. At least I will have tried to do something besides cower in a corner and pray the shooter doesn't find me.

You’re right that we need to fix the areas that broke down. But we also have to harden access and have enough armed staff, be that specially trained teachers like they have in Argyle Texas, or paid armed officers, there has to be enough armed people that at least one of them can get to every part of the building in 2 minutes or less. We will not always have the red flags like this time so just fixing where the red flags were missed or ignored will not fix the problem.

Clearly, LE failed at every level in this incident. And having armed adults on site is similarly useless unless they have compelling motivation to neutralize the threat.

There is also serious doubt that even armed teachers would have the requisite temperament and motivation to “run to the sound of the guns” when the time comes. If LE won’t respond without overwhelming superiority, why would anyone expect an English teacher to do better?

For all the prattle about “community involvement” and security costs it seems obvious to me if ANYONE were putting the safety of the students first they would be suggesting REAL community involvement by training armed parents to volunteer their off time to provide security.

NO ONE is going to have higher motivation to neutralize threats than the student’s own parents.

Furthermore, because such security would be on a voluntary basis an armed aggressor wouldn’t know whether they were facing one armed opponent, or a dozen.

The coach ran to the sound of the gun. He wasn’t even armed.

In Argyle the teachers are trained by the cops and go through training to emotionally prepare them to use force. Some drop out befor finishing the program after that training.

Plus, just because one cop punked out dosen’t mean they all would. If there were 5 or 6 armed teachers or guards or cops at least half would step up and do what they were trained to do.

Also if the access to the building were hardened properly the shooter wouldn’t get in.

Armed parents and grandparents would be great if trained and screened properly.

exit82 :" IMHO, that officer was told to stand down."

Personally, I doubt that he was instructed to "stand down".
I believe that he is an over-weight, older deputy, who got the job as SRO as a "cushie job"
to fill out his years on 'the force' until retirement.
The rest of it may be 'false flag' theater, as there is much to much of highly questionable situations, circumstances, and alleged coincidences that are highly suspect.

Turns out my initial snarky cynical post on this subject was pretty much dead on. FOUR minutes before the deputy went inside. And then he was allowed to retire. Flogging and removal of all benefits would have been more appropriate.

So you seem to think that the FBI and local police did a good job and I'm the one with the ignorant post? OK.

OK, so the Parkland High School. Five acre campus. A dozen buildings. Three thousand students. How many armed guards do you figure they will need?

They need several armed teachers and staff in each building. If they want to have guards rather than allowing their employees to protect the children and themselves they will need to hire enough of them to cover each building properly..

I thought the man was simply off campus, maybe on an official service call. I am so sorry to find out that he was armed and that he didn’t take any action to protect the children who so dearly depended upon him.
