Shotshow 2018 has just passed and there were some really good looking subcompact guns that will be a big hit for the female CCW.
There were three handguns that stood out at Shotshow 2018 for women and they are:

Yeah, but if the Rats get their way it’s possible anything more than six rounds would be illegal.

I agree. I always find it funny when I see some suggestions (eg 1911s) when for self defense a revolver (a hammer-less design, or internal hammer) would be perfect. Truly reliable (again, 1911???? Ha!), no levers and safeties to get in the way, and considering most self defense engagements for women will be short-distance ‘get off me’ a revolver is perfect.

The most important thing for any firearm (and ammunition) is reliability. The rest comes second.

In terms of pistols, I would select a polymer high capacity 9mm with no external safeties (eg Glock 19 and similar types), a good quality bullet (eg HST, Gold Dot and Ranger Bonded), good sights and then LOTS of practice at the range coupled with EVEN MORE dry fire practice.

But for a lady’s ‘get off me’ gun, a hammerless revolver is hard to beat.

Ruger LC9s Pro. Small; no external safety; striker fired, great trigger; and 7+1.

Assuming the woman in question is to be trusted with access to a full set of kitchen knives, the operation of an automobile, the use of safety matches and owning a DA/SA handgun, IMHO one of the best ones - and one which is perpetually hidden in the shadows - is the Beretta Px4 Compact in 9mm with the "G" type decocker. The "compact carry" variant of it is even better.

Wait. Light weight .45acp for women? Surely you jest.

I carry a Tarus Ultra Lite .38 revolver, accurate and easy draw. Looked at the S/W 462 .38 hammerless, it has a real hard recoil in comparison. But weight wise is about 12 oz less.

Revolver. Revolver. Revolver.

I totally agree. A revolver is the way to go.

My wife has carried a revolver for a long time and likes them. However, she misses her old single stack Sig and has decided to replace the hole in her semi-auto holster with a S&W M&P45 Shield. She’s been shooting for almost 30 years and knows what she wants and knows it’s a personal decision on what to carry.
I solved the age old controversy by carrying a J-frame and an M&P45. If we’re going to Indian Country I carry the M&P and a Maxpedition with my 1911 and 6 mags.

My wife shoots one all the time. Competently and accurately.

Review of options available, but your mileage may vary. It seriously depends upon what the woman is comfortable with. Hand size, strength, carry method, etc all play into it.

For once I have no criticism. Usually these best of lists include some losers.

A 1911 is a more training intensive gun than most alternatives. A lightweight, 4” tall 1911 in 45 acp would be hard for me to shoot - not much to grip, not much weight to help and plenty of recoil. NOT in any way a good choice for ANY new shooter, let alone most women.

“But for a lady’s ‘get off me’ gun, a hammerless revolver is hard to beat.”

I like my Beretta 92, and many would say it is a fine self-defense gun. But as a “get off me” gun, or a “belly gun”, it is too big, too hard to clear leather, and carries ammo not needed.

Not all bad guys reveal their intentions from a distance, in a way that would make shooting them legal. Many scenarios involve someone either at VERY close range or already attacking you. For that, a gun that is easy to grab, easy to pull and that will fire reliably when pressed hard into someone’s gut is hard to beat. A S&W 640 owns that role.

I got a Ruger SR9c a couple of years ago and it’s great. Very comfortable, easy to use, compact enough to conceal carry should I choose to do so. And I’m guessing way more moderately priced than the ones mentioned in the article.
