I always look behind the recliner. My dog is a creature of habit.

From reading the title, one would think you had lost a cat, and were looking to find it...

When I was a kid I went to an animal shelter for a cat. The people weren’t as friendly as the animals. The paperwork, you would think I was trying to adopt a human baby. Contract stipulated they could come to our house and do inspections to make sure the cat was ok. If they didn’t deem it a good fit, you didn’t get to take the cat home at all, and if later they didn’t deem it a happily ever after, they could take it back.
I was 9 years old but already sensitive to that kind of thinking.
Mom said we should put out some catnip and kibbles, and a cat would find us. This turned out better for me.
But if you want to “shop,” there’s craigslist, plenty of cats there, from rescues, shelters, and private homes.

Yeah, we’re on that now. My biggest fear is too close a connection with the cat people!

A relative of mine just got an adorable mixed breed puppy from an ad on Craigslist.

Another relative has gotten several really good kittens that grew into great cats (loving, friendly, personable) from a particular rescue group in her area. It’s not SPCA or county shelter, etc. If you look around for rescue groups, you’ll likely find one with plenty of cats that need a good home and they will probably be well-socialized.

I was also going to recommend using “nextdoor”.

LOL exactly. I’m not too keen on being treated like a criminal by the self-righteous “adoption”/”rescue” agencies, or the shelters (we used to call them POUNDS) that have become that way.

When I was a kid that kind of thing didn’t exist. Pretty much you wanted it you got it. Now they are as bad as the most arrogant breeder. And cost about as much.

This is mostly why I’m asking to find unassuming cat owners who happen to have litters, or maybe an elder cat to give away. I don’t need a fancy cat (unlike a dog), just one who seems nice.

Maybe I’ll also put out a notice to my aunt at her farm. She gets cats dumped on her all the time - and often keeps the girls for barn cats. They are almost always super nice, especially for girls. If she gets any boys, she can call me. (She’s 2 hours away.)

Two of my cats came from a shelter, 1 of them I picked up from someone at church. Vets know people with kittens and puppies. Local shopper papers, craigslist.

Around here, the PetCo always has a few cats from a local rescue group. They schedule the dog groups for weekends and don’t keep any of them on premises. I think the PetSmart does, as well.

My last cat saw me out deer hunting and climbed in my coat.

That language about inspecting your house is in all the documents; I’ve never known them to actually do it. They probably have it in there in case they suspect that you aren’t adopting for the right reason; generally they are very glad to place the cats and don’t give you any trouble. (But, again, I’ve never gone to a pound, just to a volunteer rescue.)

In our case, they encouraged us to also adopt the brother of the cat we really wanted, to not separate them. (They admitted that the two fought a lot, and told us that if it didn’t work out, they would take one or both back.)

Everything worked out. There’s an occasional snarl and hiss and running-around; but these are the nicest most loving cats we’ve ever had.

Live rural. THEY find, and adopt you.

The pet "rescue" stuff has become a big business and is causing a bunch of problems. Avoid! They're crazy. Google something like dark side of animal rescue and there are countless explanations of how these people are actually supporting puppy mills with donated dollars. Those crazy people have no sense.

Go to your local dollar store or Big Lots, whatever, and buy 5 cans of sardines in oil. Open one can and leave out overnite, for 5 nites. You will find a large selection of cats on the 5th nite.

There are senior organizations that will look for lost pets. One in California found my friends lost pet. There are listings for some states. Try this link

Put an empty box on your porch. Cats always find them.
