If for no other reason they deserve to be treated with proper respect for their honorable service in WWII

A wonderful moment. Hoping he can make it to 100 in good health, enlivened by his family and friends.

I saw that. That was good to go. Lost most of the use of a hand, accident, not combat.
Just last night, I caught myself holding that hand up by my chest, and I thought, 'Damn, I look like Bob Dole'. True story.

He had to bail out of a plane into the Pacific after bombing one of the most dangerous islands in the chain which earns him hero status.

Dole was seriously wounded by shrapnel from an exploding artillery shell while fighting at Hill 913 in the Italian Alps.

I know. Wasn’t making light of it, if that’s what you might have thought. Just of myself.

I salute YOU, Bob Dole.
Both you and Poppy Bush have my respect and gratitude for answering the call of duty during WWII.
You were better men than many who’ve followed you since.

You know, Jimmy Carter will probably be the next to go. When he does, I’ll remember that he also served his country in uniform.
He and GWB are the only remaining U.S. presidents to hold that distinction.

The greatest generation once so strong and many is now so few . Almost makes you want to weep, doesn't it?
We must resolve to be the best Americans we can be, and live up to being worthy of their sacrifices.
Death before dishonor.
