Video Shows Virginia Elementary School Having Class Outside In Below-Freezing Temperatures Surrounded By Snow

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – The actions of one elementary school in Virginia has many parents asking questions and wanting to ensure that their children are safe and warm after a video surfaced that shows children having class in the freezing temperatures.

The Fairfax County Parents Association took to Twitter to post a video that shows young children sitting outside of Waynewood Elementary, surrounded by snow, in below-freezing temperatures while a teacher is reading to them and pointing to a book she is holding up.

“It’s well below freezing in Fairfax County, yet young children are having storytime on the cold concrete outside at @waynewoodes. This is the result of poor leadership and confusing guidance to teachers. Get these little ones inside!” the association wrote.

In an emailed statement, FCPS’s Kathleen Miller Media Outreach Specialist wrote, “This morning on Twitter, an anonymous parent group posted a video that was taken outside of Waynewood Elementary School in Alexandria. In the video, a group of third-grade students are taking a snack and mask break in front of the school. The weather conditions were monitored, and the students were outside for less than seven minutes. The teacher was reading a story to keep the students entertained. Students do go outside for mask and snack breaks in cold weather, but that time is limited.”

Also attached to the tweet is a screenshot of the current conditions at that location. The temperature is a balmy 27 degrees and the wind chill is 19 degrees.

The children are seated on concrete and in the shade.

When the temperature drops below freezing, young children are at risk for exposure complications.

According to the CDC “when exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up your body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia or abnormally low body temperature. A body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and will not be able to do anything about it.”

Citizen Stringer reached out to the elementary school for comment and was told that we could talk to the principal only to have a person come on the line minutes later and direct us to another department and would not answer any further questions.

We also reached out to several administrative personnel by email but have yet to hear back.

Let a homeschool parent do that and watch how fast DSS is called to blow them in.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The most important life lesson I learned about winter as a kid:

Don’t let your sled crash into a tree!

5 degrees this morning and the buses ran the route with all the roof windows open. At least they allowed the kids to close the side windows. The buses were running with every window open until just recently. (Upstate NY)

Why is the free babysitting worth it to some parents?

LOL! What happened to all in the sun? In fact, most were in the long shadow of the building.

My granddaughter attended this school from 2000 to 2005. It was a great school, teachers friendly and competent. Only two o items I disliked was the second assistant deputy principal who was stupid dried old bitch with the personality and looks of Charles Laughton playing Captain Bligh in really ugly drag and the admin people refusing to be frank to the students about 9-11 in spite of the parents being killed at the Pentagon that day. All three were fathers, USN Ltcds killed in the OPNAV Watch Center. I had to explain who attacked us and killed her classmates fathers. The admin people though telling the students would be ‘traumatizing’ even though there was extensive coverage of a second graders losing battle with cancer.
