A question for everyone: What punishment would you give for each of the first 10 times that an adult with no weapon steals a parked car?

A question for everyone: What punishment would you give for each of the first 10 times that an adult with no weapon steals a parked car? In each case, the owner is not present during the theft. In each case, there is video proof of the theft, and thief’s face is clearly visible and identifiable.

My answer:

First conviction: 10 years in prison.

Second conviction: 20 years in prison.

Third conviction: Death by this method of assisted suicide, which is painless, quick, effective, and cheap: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarco_pod

Therefore, for my answer, convictions 4 through 10 will never happen.

I’m actually in favor of the Islamic (Religion of Peace) approach.

1st Offense. Cut off the hands of the thief.

(Pretty much guarantees there will be no repeat offenses.)

1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512.

I think 64 and higher would be theoretical.

An outlaw is a person with no regard for the law. Historically they were wanted dead or alive for that reason.

Line them up in front of a firing squad, and then put them out of their victims’ misery.

Your numbers would be much better than anything we do these days.

My standard thinking is that each person is “entitled” to only 5 years in jail. After that, it should be a death sentence. I don't believe in warehousing people. Minor offenses? 5 years or less (but don't be a repeat offender because it might total up above that 5 year mark). Serious crime? A mere 5 years is too insufficient for your transgression? Well, that's death.

We have about 350 million people. There is no shortage. The ones who don't know how to behave can be removed.

First offense: 50 lashes with a rattan cane, in public. In or near his home neighborhood.

Second offense: 100 lashes, and a year in prison.

Third offense: banishment to Rwanda.

As long as there are prison cells available then put ‘em in jail. If the jails are full then —-sorry Charlie. It’s the death penalty for you. You shouldn’t have done the crime.

“We have about 350 million people. There is no shortage. The ones who don’t know how to behave can be removed.”

I forget the numbers, but it is something like 80% of the crime is caused by 5% of the people. And the police already know most of the criminals.

If the justice system really wanted crime to drop - it would.

For the first offense, probably six months plus 1 day for each $100 of damage done/loss sustained.

For subsequent offenses, double the time component each time.

When the law doesn’t act, others will:

Depends on if there are any witnesses or surveillance cameras, but I’m leaning toward the penalties visited upon captured horse thieves plying their trade in my area of the southwest USA a hundred and fifty years ago.

“1st Offense. Cut off the hands of the thief.”

I remember reading that they usually waited until the fourth offense and then the least useful hand would get cut off.

Some countries have live in prison for auto theft.
Some have a program where prisoners can volunteer as a crash test dummy.
If they survive, they get parole.
