President Donald Trump requested a new trial in the civil case brought against him by advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who alleged that at some point she could not precisely remember in the mid-1990s he had sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman department store in midtown Manhattan, and that request has been denied by a federal judge.
Carroll was awarded $83 million in a defamation suit following a win in her civil suit, in which a New York City judge and jury determined that Trump was civilly liable for sexual assault. The case did not meet the bar for a criminal prosecution.
In addition to denying Trump's request for a new trial, district judge Lewis A. Kaplan also said that Trump must pay out the $83 million, for which he has posted bond. The damages were for what were alleged to be reputational damages to Carroll, sustained when Trump defended himself publicly against her allegations. This was classified as defamation.
Carroll's accusations against Trump were revealed in a tell-all expose she penned for The New York Magazine in 2019 at the height of the #MeToo movement when society at large was ready to "believe all women."
Trump called her a "wack job" and said he never met her about 5 hours after the story was published. These were the comments Carroll alleged caused her $83 million worth of harm.

Anderson Cooper was legendary, Cooper was dumbfounded and had to go to a commercial
This is the same judge who presided over the last two trials, so clearly his decision was going to go against Trump.
The modern American justice system is mostly dependent on who the judge is who hears the case. Appeals are expensive, and slow, and not often successful. The trial court judge can “shape” the case to make appeals difficult by favoring one side. The rule of law is very uncertain under these circumstances.
I’m still going to be surprised if she sees a cent.

Here is another example of corrupt idiot courts running their circus.
I've been saying that for about 3 decades. It's obvious once you've seen it over and over again, especially with these ridiculous cases.
We are governed by insane/corrupt men, not laws.
When did Kaplan move up to the Federal Court? How can a judge impartially judge his own case.
She’ll never see a dime. This was only the start of appeals process.
He was the judge in the original trial in 2023, then presided over the ridiculous slander trial a few months ago, and now he’s denying the request for a new trial. 🤬
“a New York City judge and jury”
Nuff said. A kangaroo court by definition.
If I owned a major corporation headquartered in NY state, I would be working to change that post-haste.
The world has seen this judicial clown show for precisely what it is; a takings clause with no strings.
GET THE HELL OUT OF NEW YORK!
Interesting that the judge thinks the slutty crazy ass old whore’s $83 million judgement is not excessive. When this same judge, Lewis A Kaplan had the Al Qada brains behind the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania up for sentencing he fined him $33 million so I guess E Jean Carroll’s hurt feelings are worth 2.5X what 224 lives are worth. Probably makes sense if you have a serious case of TDS.
That’s just incredible. There’s a judge who needs disbarment.
We are governed by insane/corrupt men, not laws.
Don't forget that we have insane, corrupt men writing the laws, and other insane corrupt men enforcing the laws.
Biden and Fani/Bragg and the Congress can give any judge a run for his money.
Well aware of it. It seems to be the other two legs of the three legged stool of corruption in Washington DC.
How do members of congress come to congress with modest means, but leave so wealthy? They are clearly getting paid for their position outside of the government.
I have long blamed FDR and Truman for the mess that is our Federal Judiciary, but what you have told me gives me further insight into the matter.
When did Kaplan move up to the Federal Court? How can a judge impartially judge his own case.
Kaplan was appointed to the Federal court by Clinton in 1994. He has been a senior judge of the district court since 2011. If a motion is filed to reconsider his judgment, he can reconsider his judgment. And his judgment may be appealed to an appellate court.
