What would you do? Mother-in-law and wife
Mother In Law | December 11, 2004 | Me

Okay, what would you do? A friend just showed up at our house because her monther-in-law is at her house. She does not want to go home as long as her in-laws are there. She simply will not be in the same house with her in-laws, even if it is her own house.

But now she is in our house. What to do? I don't think I've ever seen a situation like this. It is not a case of her in-laws having done anything to her. She just does not like them.

What to do?

Tell her to grow up and stop being a manipulative drama queen.

You're asking advice on an extremely complex and sensitive social situation from a bunch of anonymous strangers?

Can't think of a better - or smarter - bunch of people to ask. And, I'm certain no one will be complaining this thread was already posted.

It is definately not weeks. We are only hour(s) into this. Trying to sort it out before the hours run long and the movie runs out.

This isn't a hard question. Is MIL staying the evening, night, the weekend or what?

Just shootin' the breeze

With her hair up in curlers

An' her pants to her knees..

Siiiigned

OK - do you want your friend staying the night? Is this a big problem? That doesn't seem like a big deal for a friend. Most people might have a good time visiting.

Years ago, I had a similar situation. A female cousin by marriage of my husband came over and brought her twin babies to get away from her immature husband. He wasn't hitting her or at least she didn't say so; she was just fed up with him. So, they stayed a few days with us and it was okay. Finally she got ready to go back home. So, we took her home. About the time we got back to the house, she called again, "Uh, Chad's brother and his wife are coming over here to visit and Chad says I have to get the babies out of here because he will not allow either of them to touch the babies." So, I told her that it sounded like she was married to a real immature boy, I had just barely gotten back home and there was not a thing I could do about it. . it was HIS responsibility to FIX THINGS if he had the problem of not wanting them to touch the babies (like telling them not to come over for starters if he felt like that)." So, I suppose that may have been the start of her beginning to grow up and him, too, and realize the world didn't revolve around them! I never heard from them again, so I assume they don't like me any more. They did divorce, not a surprise.

That's may be what happens. To understand the situation better, think of someone you work with and know well at work. Some contact outside of work but not much. Then they knock on your door and say, my mother-in-law is at my house.

OK - so she isn't a good friend you would have happily taken in. Unless you want to make a big fuss that will make things uncomfortable at work, you are probably stuck eith her tonight.

It's bizarre behavior, and you know know a little more about her than you did before. ;~D

So what's she doing and who does she think you are talking to on the computer?

Watching Home Alone 3. She knows I am on the computer all the time when I get home from work. We are chating and I am keeping an eye on this thread.

Well, if that's the way it is and it doesn't bother you that much, make the best of it and have a good time.

Since you are on FR, that means she is alone in some other part of your house.

Say goodbye to us. Try to have fun with her and tell us how it turned out tomorrow.

If it happens again, though, go the Holiday Inn route.

Send her over to visit MY mother-in-law.

After that, hers will seem not so bad after all.
