The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, I got a real Emerson Specwar for evaluation today. After looking it over, I'm amending a bit of what I wrote yesterday.

First, the "little" knife is just about identical, except for the lack of the laser-engraved logo. I suspect Camillus was the OEM for this project, which may have been some sort of failed attempt, so the knives were unmarked when they were closed out. The two knives are identical, right down to the vibra-honed finish, except for size.

Well, the big knife has a cast metal handle, rather than molded plastic. This is a downcheck in my book. Ever grab a hunk of metal after it's been in 120 degree (or -20 degree) tempreature for a day? That's my only gripe for what is an otherwise vey impressive piece of hardware.

The sheaths of both knives are identical, and identically lame, as I mentioned yesterday. The sheath is a VEY important part of a fixed-blade knife. I'd rate the little knife as an "A", and the big one as "B+". The sheath gets a "D" grade from me.

All is not lost, however. I think there are third-party knife sheaths out there that can save the day. They will be on my online hunt tonight. Even if I have to spend a bit more, these knives WILL be in great shape before I send them off, with Hobbit Hole engraving, to deserving troops.

I won't be buying more of either size, but I'll make sure they meet my impossibly high standards before we give them away.

Hey OT, we're watching the Raleigh Ringers on PBS. They are fascinating, all those different bells and hand-chimes; the guy with the big bells really gets a workout(don't ever think about telling g'nad I said that!)

Bell-ringing is such a 'team sport' we're trying to figure out how one would ever practice alone!!

Merry Christmas, LSA

MERRY CHRISTMAS morning!!

Just finished putting the cinnamon rolls in the oven to rise, and gonna go wrap the last couple of gifts. Got home from Church about 3:00am after the CHoir party, did St. Nick with the kids, and opened a couple of gifts. We'll do the rest in the morning. No one in this house will be up before noon, I'm sure. I've left orders to put the rolls in the oven to bake, and wake me when they're done! ;o) Gonna set the coffee pot on the timer and finally get some shut-eye.

God Bless you all this Christmas. I cherish the friendships that we've made and maintained here in the Hobbit Hole. Was thinking about Entmoot when I put my flamingo ornament on the tree. It got it at a little Christmas Shop in Melbourne. I'll take a picture of it later today and post it.

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope everyone has a great day!

"Homer" adjusted pretty well to being here I think, he slept all day yesterday and all through the night. Where ever he's been, it tuckered him out. He's staying here in the house today, the young girl who works at the store and has fed critters for us before is working the store later today and will come and let him out to pee.

We'll probably be in touch from the beach house later.

Goooood morning! Merry Christmas!!

Congratulations on the new niece, Lil! Hope to see pictures in the future. ;-)

GUESS WHAT???? We opened presents late last night (we usually do it that way, and then Christmas Day is quieter and more...I dunno...thoughtful), and GUESS what they gave me????

ROTK EE!!!! I thought we were maybe going to get it for Margaret, but we hadn't gotten to any place that had it and no one had mentioned it, so I figured I'd be waiting who knows HOW long to see it! Definitely did a happy dance when I opened that! Totally unexpected!!

Heh...Stephen said "Or to you, it's not 'Return of the King' - it's 'The Further Adventures of Faramir'." I didn't think I'd been that obvious.

I'll be watching it sometime over the next day. Let the spoilers begin! Woo-hoo!!!

Also got a lot of other great stuff, including several books from Dad about writing. That tells me HE at least is taking me seriously, and I coulda kissed him for that, if we weren't rather non-demonstrative Scots-Norwegians...

Now I gotta finish getting ready for church...

Did I say woo-hoo?? Let me say it again! Woo-hoo!!

Glad Homer's doing OK! Is Gidget going with you tomorrow, then? So he'll have the house to himself?

Err...today.

I was up too late. I'm all discombobulated.

Which, incidentally, is a great word.
