The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I always forget whether it's etomology or entomology. One has to do with words, the other is bugs.

Etymology, I think! There's also philology, which is a lovely word, IMO.

Philology is one I like. Much easier than a word that makes me think of bugs.

Etymology is the study and history of words.

Entomology is the study of insects.

Thank you, Mr. Jeopardy!

I'll take "Words derived from Greek roots" for 200, Alex! ;-)

You can see the Witch-King stab wound scar on his left shoulder, and the Shelob wound above his fight breast.

I was gonna argue with you. I thought she got him in the abdomen. But you're right, there's no abdomen scar. Maybe he was just wearing the Mithril off the shoulder, kinda "elvish-like"...if yuh know whut I mean...

LOL.

I won't mention how bad my score last night was. Hurt my average, it did. Study literature and authors, I must.

Note to self: do not have two beers before you show up to play the game.

To: ecurbh; All

I have some questions for LOTR fans (obviously I have not read the book).

1. If Sauron made the one ring, who made all the others? Why did Gandalf have one of the elven rings when he is not an elf?
Was Gollum ever good during the Two Towers or was he always scheming.
2. When Frodo returns to the shire, he is obviously ill because of the ring, but is he dying?
Bilbo had the ring for a long time, Frodo had it for a year and it made him so ill. Why didn't bilbo get sick?
3. The gray havens, what exactly happens to them i.e. Frodo, Bilbo and Gandalf?
4. Does Legolas go the gray havens?
5. What happens to Gimli?
Thats it for now, I know I will think of some more.
Thanks everybody.

Afternoon...

I was readin' how weird and nerdy y'all are and gettin' ready to post when the power went out. It's been raining like crazy and we were havin' some thunderstorms.

Whilst the power was out, Lowes delivered our new dryer. Remember the trouble we had with Sears? Lowes was having a sale. Wife went last night and bought it. It was here at 11:00 this morning.

Feelin' some better as long as I take things slow. Can't be up much. Was all I could do to make way for them to get the dryer into the garage.

Wife's off to take Nana to thedoctor. She's been feelin' weak and dizzy. This morning she mentioned her ear was bothering her. I'm thinkin' that could be it. But I could be wrong. Still, her hearing has been a lot worse lately.

Mmmm...literature and authors...

Not exactly painful study!

Remember any of the tough ones? Just curious!

1. The Elves made the other rings. Cirdan gave Gandalf his ring when Gandalf showed up in Middle Earth.
1b. Debatable... I think no.
2. Not precisely dying. More of a soul-sickness than anything. The difference between Frodo and Bilbo is that Frodo was actively working against the Ring, and eventually destroyed it.
3. Not sure what you're asking... they go across the sea to the Undying Lands where the Elves and Valar dwell.
4 and 5. Yes, and he takes Gimli with him.

"of all the characters to get topless, why did it have to be him?"

Agreed.

I hope you don't mind if we answer out of sequence... some are harder than others. Very good questions! And questions that show the movies hit their mark, even if some gripe about changes in the details.

2. When Frodo returns to the shire, he is obviously ill because of the ring, but is he dying? Bilbo had the ring for a long time, Frodo had it for a year and it made him so ill. Why didn't bilbo get sick?

He's ~changed~ from the experience and the pain of the journey and the destruction of the ring. I think there is some hint at the notion that he was much more affected by the ring than Bilbo was, as Bilbo possessed it before Sauron had regained his strength, and the power of the ring grew a Sauron did.

Most importantly, Frodo always felt the wound of the Nazgul blade... it never really healed.
