The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Everytime I watch a LOTR movie I see something I didnt catch previously.
Last night figured out that when the Witch King is riding into Hobbiton and stops to ask the hobbit (the one who is outside his home with the barking dog who backs away into its home) where the Shire is and Baggins - that hobbit is the farmer Maggot. (Sam: "You've been in the farmer Maggot's crops!").

I suppose ya'll knew this (I am not going to read back thru all these posts to find out!) but I caught it just last night.

Newgeezer, I got past the first level in Paths of the Dead, saved the game and went to play the Road to isengard. I completed that level, saved it and dang if it didn't delete the previous wins (Paths of the Dead). Arggh!!

Good morning! We had noticed early on that they named that character Farmer Maggot in the credits!

Sorry you have to do Paths of the Dead again....

Well, neither did I in the theaters... But there are many eyes here that can pick up any details we miss.

Woo-hoo! Dad is gonna drop off Teresa in a bit so we can bake cookies here! I know it's mostly just so he doesn't hafta be in the midst of all the fuss, but it means I can use my own kitchen AND don't have to go out much. All good...

Looks like we have about four kinds lined up: gingerbread, sugar, jam thumbprints (a necessity where certain bothers are concerned) and spritz - those are the easy butter cookies you make with a cookie press.

I think that's about as ambitious as I get. If I'm really motivated, I'll make fudge, too.

Sounds fun! What's the writing like today?

We lost power for an hour this morning, and then the front struck. It's raining and getting cold and we don't know what the snow forecast is yet.

Haven't written yet - may a bit later.

I had a long talk with my brother last night about writing - the one in CA that has done some freelancing. He had pretty discouraging things to say about making it in the fiction world - of any stripe. But he also gave me some tips for books it would be handy to have and such like.

He's also making me think twice about attempting to write articles of some sort.

But I'm also determined to at least collect rejection slips where books are concerned!

On another subject...wish we'd get snow!

Ignore him. Does it actually matter at all to you if you ever get published? Isn't it the writing that's the most important thing?

I am torn about the snow. I want some, but not enough that we miss church tomorrow night.

Well...the benefit of articles is that they CAN be easier to get published, and if they are, they're decent money. Not as in enough to make a living, generally...but something.

Fiction publishing, according to him, generally pays peanuts, unless you really make it big.

Writing is important to me, but I wouldn't mind making a tiny bit of extra cash on it if it didn't take away from writing bigger stuff!

If you're interested in doing articles, do them. If it's fiction you want, go for that.

As for paying, well, I know that, but it's a good way to supplement an income. Especially writing in-genre, like science fiction. There are a number of authors out there making a living writing SF, and I'm not just talking about JK Rowling or (bleck) Robert Jordan, either.
