FREEPER FAMILY TABLE--Weaning
me | April 6, 2005 | grellis

I am hoping that we can discuss a broad range of weaning, not just the ol' "breast to cup." What are some methods you employed to wean your children from the crib into the "big kid's bed?" How and when did you wean your child out of the afternoon nap? From diapers to underpants?

In other words: What are some ways you have gotten your kids from Point A to Point B?

I know, that is a pretty broad subject. Be as specific as you like or feel free to offer advice in general terms. If you have a child at a particular weaning stage, use this opportunity tp pick the brains of our panel of experts (yes, I'm talking about all of you! Today I'm no expert).

Coffee's on!

So, we permissively let her have her nighttime "bod-dul."

Like I always say, you've gotta pick your battles. Sam is now three and he has to have something to drink in bed with him. Should make for some stormy nighttime toilet training but that's a bridge we're not crossing just yet.

Hmmm, let's see. The latest home to sell in the neighborhood was a 2-bedroom, 2 bath single family, uh, hut. That went for at least $549K (they always go over listed price, in 2-3 days)

OMG!

I've pretty much stayed out of the discussion today, because, first I only have 1 and second I had no problems.

She was 10 months old when she basically told me she had no interest in my boobs anymore - she stopped nursing and wanted a bottle.

I feel for all of you with the potty training and nighttime wetting nightmares - because I had NONE. She is now almost 7 and has wet her bed exactly once and that was 100% totally my fault. I didn't get out of bed to open the gate across her door when she started hollering. After that night I put the gate across the stairs instead of her bedroom door. She was 2 when that happened.

I will now go back into my lurking mode because it is obvious that I should have no complaints.

Tell him that you're worried about your son getting used to being in your bed, and somehow tie it to your husband not getting as much sex because of it.

You'll have to be crafty how you say this.

My 8 year old daughter was the earliest to be potty trained during the day, and the last to be potty trained at night. She was 6 and still wearing pull-ups.

Finally at 6 or 7, we started taking off the pull-ups and she finally started staying dry at night. We moved to our new house almost a year ago, and I know that non of my kids have had accidents in the new house.

My son was also bad about staying dry at night, but he was better than my daughter. He didn't have accidents every night, and he would stay dry if he went to the bathroom before he went to sleep. Of course if he forgot to go (or we forgot to remind him) then he would have an accident. He was probably 8 and still having occasional accidents.

My other daughter was the best at staying dry at night. Of course she was the worst sleeper. She would wake up, but she wouldn't go to the bathroom by herself. She would always call me to take her to the bathroom.

I don't miss those days.

When we got a big bed for my son, he loved it! However, he couldn't crawl out of his crib, and he could get out of the bed. We put a door lock on his door and told him he had to stay in his room. We told him we'd take the door lock off if he stayed in his room. After a few nights he did.

My twin girls were another story. We had to put them in big beds because they were climbing out of their cribs and into their sister's crib. They really didn't want to stay in their rooms, and we kept that lock on their rooms for 4 years. We would unlock it when they were asleep. Last year we moved to a new house so that the girls would not have to share a room. One of the girls is good about going to bed, and the other one isn't. Jenny is constantly up and out of her room. However, since she isn't sharing it doesn't bother her sister. Jenny also turns on the light and colors in her room at bedtime. She reads out loud. When she shared a room with her sister, she drove her sister crazy. Emily is very calm at night time. She turns on an Amy Grant CD, reads, and falls asleep with a book on her face.

We started putting water in that night-time bottle. We started with a little water and milk, and slowly increased the water. The kids never lasted long on just water, and gave up the bottle easily.

It really wasn't that funny ...

Sure it was! You know you're a father when you are wearing the result of one of your child's bodily functions. Just like you know you are a mom when you leak breast milk all over while grocery shopping, or during mass, or at a PTA meeting...

Being able to laugh about these things is what wins the battles.

Hey ladies. I've been on a bit of a hiatus.
Hope you all are well. As for weaning, ahhh, just too much to share.
As for us, Jacob is about to celebrate his first bday on the 22nd, I can't believe it.
good to be back:-)

Congrats on successfully getting though the year! I really should have been keeping better track of all the parents on this thread who have had babies in the past year. Dudley, Hungarian Gypsy, Kiki, you...I know there are a few more, I just can't think of them right now. I think my brain is on permanent hiatus.

Welcome back and Happy Mother's Day!!!
