Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

we all get here via different roads

Amen to that! Maybe it's the company I keep or the stuff that I read, but it seems to me that there are far more instances of libs seeing the light and moving to the right than of the converse. Once the "idealism" that the professors throw at the kids is overcome by the school of hard knocks, minds often change. How many young adults become instant conservatives the first time they see their paycheck and notice that 1000 gross is like 600 net?

i think that once kids are educated as conservatives there is no turning liberal. xsteen is surrounded by libs at her HS and to a girl they are kneejerk, uninformed and totally reliant on FEELINGS rather than facts to back up their positions. she sees it first hand.

He is trying...he re-enforces what I say, and tries to keep me from losing it...and is very loving to me and listens, and lets the KACTeen bleed off some to him....He wants me to be happy and to keep his son moving until adulthood...but I can't take too many more days like last night...I still hurt. I had an asthma attack last night and still feel tight chested. There are days that if my dad had a spare room I would take a vacation in West Texas for a few weeks...but he doesn't.

Times like this when I really miss my mom....
