Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I am at that point almost....I just don't think he would do very well in it. He's not really openly defiant...he's sneaks around and tries not to get caught.

Oh yes...I think it keeps him slightly in check...he doesn't like to hurt me...which is why he sneaks instead of telling me "up yours"....

what sorts of consquences are there for you to inflict on him for when he does get caught? taking the travel hockey away from xsboy would keep him obeying us, bc there is no way he can do it without us paying for it and hauling his butt to and fro. They have to learn consequences for their actions and it has to be something that is very meaningful to them.

Problem is is the KACTeen uses the bad stuff to reenforce the image of him at a bad boy...and I can't stop him from it. This makes me so horribly frustrated that it gnaws at me. When his birthmother and sister were killed in a traffic accident when he was 8, he was sitting in his sister's seat, and he's got bunches of survivor's guilt...

It's only the love I have for KAChubby that is keeping me here...and perhaps the knowledge that after he turns 18, if he wants to self destruct, it's his right...and that that day is only 1 year, two months and 6 days away. He will have enough money because of an inheritance and annuity (meant mostly to get him through college) to go do his own thing for four years...we will see if he matures or crashes and burns. But if he does, it will be on his own head.

well we were just discussing this the other day, bc of the writing assignment xsteen had for english. do we make our own destiny? i think we do. yes, your son was dealt a bad hand (was this your husband's son by a prior marriage?) in the situation of losing his mother and sister and feeling survivor's guilt, but we ARE responsible for ourselves and at some point, that point has to be driven home. you can be miserable and act out and claim that it is because of some horrible thing that happened to you, or you can take charge of yourself and your own life and realize your life IS what you make of it, and you really have no one but yourslf to blame at the end of the day. has he had any counseling?

phone and his right to go out friday nights and his skateboard are the most effective consequences...and I do that...He's spent the last year doing bunches of community service, and now faces another 90 hours of it (for missing and being tardy to class too often - the abscences are mostly a case of getting to class too late to even be counted tardy...you get too many in our school district, you have to do community service and pay a fine.

I am just exhausted. He tried to commit suicide about 18 months ago, is on meds and has a counselor, has PTSD and ADD and SAD and now I am tired.

He does have a good heart, and is trying but is impulsive, depressed and pig headed and proud. Bad combination.

well that answers the counseling question. i have no experience with counseling, and bc of the extreme trauma of his situation, losing family members in that way etc. i would think it necessary, but it would need to be someone that wasn't going to permit him to luxuriate in self-hate and rely on the circumstances to avoid straightening up. i am afraid i am not too much of a softy when it comes to personal responsibility. i am a big believer in it and i would want a counselor that was going to preach from that same page. i don't blame you for being exhausted, it sounds unbearable.

sounds like he needs to be disabused of the notion that being a BAD BOY is desirable, attractive or the only option available to him.

Start hanging USMC recruiting posters.

Tell him, if he really thinks he's a Bad Boy, to go prove it.
