Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - threnody
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/25/2005 | The Janitor

Posted on 05/25/2005 5:16:48 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun

a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy

Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.

Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

OK Pod Person, where is the Real SG?????

As you look through my window
Deep into my room
At the tapestries all faded
Their vague and distant glories
Concealed in the gloom
The icy fingers of forgotten passions
Softly brushing my lips
At the tips of my primitive soul

Plus sore hands eliminate knitting to reduce your stress level! I have ripped out this same afghan 3 times already. One of my circular needles unscrewed itself from the cable and dropped about 30 stitches before I even noticed it. I had to start over because this yarn is funky and impossible to un-knit more than a stitch at a time.
Do you know I am still waiting to finish that stupid toe? ;)

Yep, even if it was a brief, during lunch, shopping expedition.

Toes are intimidating at first...but it's only because they convince you you have to graft them. drawstring and three needle bindoff are easy....and you never need to find a yarn needle...only maybe for the drawstring method, a crochet hook to pull the yarn through.

I know it's a rough day. I have a secret stash of nicorette gum that I keep for real emergencies. I wouldn't smoke a cigarette for anything...but I can chew the nicorette, get nicotine buzzed, and then get sick to my stomach (it gives me spasms that are rather painful) and remember one of the reasons why I don't use this stuff any more...and it doesn't have the same addictive effect that chipping by smoking would...

I am on my second piece today.

Bobby, that *innocent* veneer you like to sport like a new shiny, new pocketknife, is wide-rulered paper thin...and thinning. That's OK though, I'm waiting for the REAL, WILD Bobby to come out. I think you're SCARED. Heh heh.

You're the ONLY one in the class that's STILL using wide-rule paper, you doofus. You need a hug. Come here. Now.
