Word For The Day, Thursday, May 26, 2005

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

[artifice \AR-tuh-fis\, noun: 1. Cleverness or skill; ingenuity; inventiveness. 2. An ingenious or artful device or expedient. 3. An artful trick or stratagem. 4. Trickery; craftiness; insincere or deceptive behavior.]

[Built by design and artifice, it fell apart in confusion and chaos. --John Gray, [1]False Dawn

This theatricality is necessary to signal Prospero's farewell to magic, and indeed the play debates that very contrast between artifice and reality, illusion and truth. --Amy Rosenthal, "An insubstantial pageant," [2]New Statesman, February 3, 2003

The smoke had cleared enough for him to see bayonets flash in the distance, behind the wall, what looked like thousands of them, the wall itself appearing to rise out of the smoke as if produced by the artifice of some magician. --Kathleen Cambor, [3]In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden

The intuitive connection children feel with animals can be a tremendous source of joy. The unconditional love received from pets, and the lack of artifice in the relationship, contrast sharply with the much trickier dealings with members of their own species. --Frans De Waal, [4]The Ape and the Sushi Master

]

Etymology: [Artifice comes from artificium, from artifex, artific-, "artificer, craftsman," from Latin ars, art-, "art" + facere, "to make." It is related to artificial. ]

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Comment Section:

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

[Watching McPain engage in obligatory artifice on this morning's Fox & Friends was illuminating. It really is all about him and his movie.]

Good morning to you, gw! You are one pleasant guy that in feeling so punk in the way that you do, that you would cheerily wish everyone such a nice "good morning."

I sure hope that you're feeling better today....

"Who is "Better" (and who is Punk for that matter!) and why do you hope gw is felling her butter Better than anybody else who gw chooses to feel batter?" Robt asks innocently.

Do you hope Mrsgw gets to feel Better too? Or does that somethong you'd rather not bring up in class in pubic? (Er, publick.)

A doctor examined a woman, took the husband aside, and said, "I don't like the looks of your wife at all."
"Me neither doc," said the husband. "But she's a great cook and really good with the kids."

Oh, well, sure. TN has 3 crooked demo politicians.

Down here, they could start by arresting all of the demo's in the GA legistlature....... The repubbies left over (and the AJC idiotorial writers) wouldn't notice.

How clever! Better than the potty chair and beach towels over windows get-up we used on road trips when the kiddos were little. Why do they always have to go again 10 minutes after leaving a rest stop?
A+++ !

Bobby, how do you do it? Your witty, if not blush-causing, way with words, doesn't seem to square with your rat's nest hair and runny nose and old gum befind your ear--WITH junch chunks in it. I observed early on your inconguities, pointing to your eccentricities which are the conundrum of Bobby...of which I like.

Now Scram or I'll pants ya.

Xs, I forgot what you call an unkwown down zipper, in Philly, but Bobby dun gots one...AGAIN...today. And he smells like a dirty boys' bathroom.

Hey Dupa, can you take that on The Vomit Comet? I want one. And Dupa, ya want my other twinkie? It's fresh, not skunky. :-)

Hmmmph!

Bobbyyyyyy, he didn't pick my twinky, he GOT my leftover Twinkie. That is, if he wants it. It he has a bite left I'll give him a quarter to give it to you. I'll ask him kindly to not suck out all the cream. I can give you no promises. You may smell my cheek now.

That was meant for Bobby...as I make him wait for my every direction. I threw it in as just a "funny/bizarro" thing...kinda like Bobby is. I'm waiting Bobby...and I'm tapping one of my black patent leather mary janes.
