I Love the original version with Wilder. The funny thing is to watch it on TV and see what they take out such as the part of the boat trip on the chocolate river where Wonka (Wilder) is TOTALY whacked! Very Creepy! The movie always seemed to me be to a criticism of western commercial culture and parents who spoil their children and don't make them behave. All the children except Charlie are little sh*ts in one way or another. My favorite line is where Wonka (Wilder) grabs Charlie by the arm and looks deep into his eyes and says : "We are the dreamers of dreams and We are the makers of music." I think it was meant to be a statement of the creative impulse in Humans and how we should not loose sight of that fact.As for JD, I like him. I too have come to the conclusion that unless they are a total asshat I will ignore most of the stupid comments that come from Hollywood. I even like to listen to Streisand sing and I still like to watch Susan Sarandon specifically in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Atlantic City, and Bull Durham.

I saw a trailer for the new Willy Wonka movie. It looked absolutely horrible and dark. Depp looked to be replaying Edward Scissorhands. My family wont be seeing this trashy piece of crap.

re: What no one seems to want to say is is it because of the actors and actresses themselves and what they say.)))

I don't consciously boycott entertainers (except maybe the Dixie Chicks, but that was a nat'l movement) because you might as well cut yourself off from all popular entertainment, and I'm not willing to do that...

But I think there's some subliminal stuff going on...like how suddenly Julia Roberts started seeming kind of boring and scrawny in Ocean's 11, and like she'd had some butcher after her face that seemed to leave her with a skull-like appearance. Just didn't seem like the luminous girl I remembered from Sleeping with the Enemy. Was it because of her obnoxious political remarks? Maybe.

Or maybe we're getting sick and tired of actors and their passionate belief in some kind of divinity that celebrity confers on them. I get as sick of that as I do their stupid political opinions.

Batman Begins has the "fiance" of Tom Cruise in it. How many people say "I'm not giving my money to a bunch of Scientologists?"

Yes, I'm sure plenty of people boycotted Batman Begins because an actress in it is engaged to someone who is a Scientologist < /sarcasm >. Really, the stuff some people find to be preoccuppied with amazes me.

He left because he's in love with a French woman and he left during the Clinton administration.

Weird guy, that Johnny Depp. Born in Owensboro, Kentucky, and raised in Florida....and now look at him.

Depp became good friends with the late, eccentric Hunter Thompson (of Louisville) after the two met at the Kentucky Derby one year.

Both perfectly good reasons.

Wonka was a very dark book. Dahl was a good writer, but somewhat dark by today's standards.

Wonka was not a 'very dark book'.

From what I understand Roald Dahl's widow had ultimate creative control, and the movie will be much more true to the book than the Gene Wilder film.

So what? Willy Wonka begins and ends with Gene Wilder.

End of discussion.

And that interview where suddenly I'm anti-American? It was untrue.

He's a liar. He is denying he said it, not apologizing for it.

What a putz.

I'm a huge fan of Wilder...I remember a for-tv play in the seventies that has since disappeared..."Scarecrow"...it was one of his first performances. Excellent! Wish I could find it.

agree...and I still don't understand the fascination with "Pirates". Turned it off after 5 minutes.

Your sarcasm is noted. See post 84 and the theory of subliminal impact. Los Angeles has over 3 million people and New York City has over 8 million. Yet, these movies only seem to draw 3 to 4 million people. How many people from fly over country do not go to these movies because of what ever reason - whether it is the persons politics or religion. For me, I do not care if the entertainer is Dem or Repub but if they spout off against the United States, I do not pay to see or hear them. If the person is not a Christian, I do not pay. If the person is a moral deviant, I do not pay. That is my choice.

Original Depp article:

Johnny Depp: U.S. is like a stupid puppy - Wednesday, September 3, 2003 Posted: 10:17 AM EDT (1417 GMT)

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- Hollywood star Johnny Depp said on Wednesday the United States was a stupid, aggressive puppy and he would not live there until the political climate changed.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the "Pirates of the Caribbean," told the German news magazine Stern he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, and their two children.

"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.

"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," said the star of the off-beat films "Edward Scissorhands" and "Dead Man."

Depp slammed George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.

Also from the trailers doesn't Depp look like Michael Jackson in the movie?

Depp has had a lot of work done on his face. What you are reacting to is the obvious artificial nature of his face.

Why an actor or entertainer would disfigure his own face is a mystery to me. Why not just age gracefully and move into mature roles?
