Letting my fellow Freepers know that the new battlestar season begins tonight at 10 on Scifi. I know we had a galactica thread a couple of weeks ago, I'm jsut starting this one for anyone else who wants to talk esp with respect to its apparent take on the Islamofascism

BSG is probably the best Sci-Fi show that television has ever seen. I TiVo it every Friday.

I'm happy for fans of this show, who seem to REALLY enjoy it. I wish I could--I liked Farscape, but don't watch much TV, so it takes a really good show to get me to watch. I liked the BSG miniseries, but not THAT much. I've seen some of the show and it leaves me cold. I love hard-edged SF, epic storylines, space, and the blonde hottie, but this thing just never caught fire for me. I found it freary, incessantly gloomy, and it seemed there was nothing really going on because the Cylons were secretly behind every damned thing that happened. The religious angle is NOT about Islamofascism--the show's creator is a lib who is saying this is how ALL religions behave, and in fact this is one of the annoying elements to me. And the characters are, with one exception, dull--period. The exception is Mary McDonnel's President, who I find very interesting, very machiavellian. She was set up to be the traditional wimpy liberal and instead makes hard decisions and is looking out for her own interests, too. (My favorite moment of the miniseries was when she ordered the ships to abandon the slower ships--she took in the info, and made a hard choice.) Other than this character, everyone else is either a wimpy male, a butch female, or just cranky and dull.

Again, I hope the show's fans enjoy it. But I watched the miniseries and several episodes and wondered what all the fuss was about.

it is hard not to see the similarity in the behaviour of cylons and Islamists. From the surprise attack, the apocalyptic vision for the future, suicide bombs and terrorism. The thing that convinced me was the part about never dying.

The show is going to twist things around a bit, I predict. For example, we really don't know who the "good" guys are. We have polytheists vs monotheists, who knows...

I watched the BSG mini series and thought it was awesome.

I wish the cable company would come up with a package consisting of "history channel, discover channel, SciFi, cartoon network, spike and espn" for 10-20 bucks. They can keep the rest of the trash. As great as those channels are, I can't justify spending 50+ bucks a month for them. :(

Thanks for the post - I had no clue. I had watched the first season from recordings made off of SkyNet and assumed that season 2 would be broadcast first overseas then shown here.

Something to look forward to on television!

The show's creator himself has said yes, there are 9-11 and Islamic parallels, but he's also said that the cylons are depictions of ALL religious "extremists".

As for never dying, that's not an exclusively Islamic concept. Christians are promised eternal life after death, after all.

I've heard the show is good. But I never saw an episode. Worth checking out then, right?

Hrmmm...I'm a bit of a sci-fi nerd, so I guess I should check it out.

SF is cool to me because it promotes discussion of various ideas. Here's a sample of the thinking about the religious angle of BSG:

http://www.beliefnet.com/story/166/story_16633_3.html

“It seems so far that the Cylons are almost a caricature of robotic evangelicalism,” says Reiss. “It could be that the writers are trying to make a statement that this is what happens when evangelical Christianity runs amok, the militant nature of it. If that is the statement they’re trying to make I find that very sad, that’s a caricature of evangelicalism. On the other hand, I’m willing to say it’s probably more complex than that.”

“I think that the clash between a polytheistic culture and a monotheistic enemy helps to moderate somewhat the parallel that the show seems to draw with the current conflict between the Western world and Islamic fundamentalism,” says a reader on Televisionwithoutpity.com’s message boards. “By giving the Cylons the 'good' kind of religion and the humans the 'backward' kind, it makes the parallel less clunky and simplistic.”

And while it certainly seems that the Cylons could be painted with the broad strokes of Christian or Islamic fundamentalism, another Cylon on the show, Leoben Conoy, espouses seemingly Buddhist beliefs when revealing, during an interrogation, he’ll be “reincarnated” in an exact duplicate.

Moore concedes that the belief system of the Cylons encompasses aspects from Christian fundamentalism, Islamic jihad, and even Eastern concepts, but says that he still really hasn’t “sat down and defined the theology of the Cylons.”

That last comment, btw, strikes me as CYA.

That is a value judgement, and a personal opinion most adults are reluntant to share.

You do seem to like it a lot, I gather. Not the same thing.
