The 28th Dakar rally, will set off for the first time from Portugal, As 483 vehicles (232 motorbikes, 177 cars and 74 trucks) leave Lisbon and the 900 km journey to Dakar Senegal. Since its creation in 1978, Dakar has inspired dreams and passions. From the very outset of this mythical race, the rally has become a true social phenomenon. Nurtured by the spirit of adventure and the passion of its courageous participants, The Dakar Rally has since remained faithful to its founding values: in the heart of Africa, a unique sporting competition experienced by all, amateurs and professionals alike, as a matchless human experience. At the outset of Dakar, one man’s dream outrode everything. In 1977, Thierry Sabine, motorcycle rider on the Abidjan-Nice Rally, was saved in extremis after being lost in the Libyan desert. The following year, he created Le Paris-Dakar, a race open to all riders and drivers sparked by the spirit of adventure. Since then, the popular, media and sporting success of The Dakar has never failed. Without forsaking any of its magic, The Dakar Rally has moved on, gained in maturity and safety, welcomed an ever-increasing number of competitors of all nationalities, all come to seek after a dream in its raw form, adventure and the quest of their own limits.

Car and Driver has a nice quick write-up of Robby "Crash" Gordon's entry from the current issue of the magazine.

Thanks, good link. That hummer looks like they are using a trophy truck suspension. 24" of wheel travel? Nice.

And the Dakar website - dakar.com (points to the English version; there's also French, Spanish and Portugese versions).

For tracking purposes, Gordon and co-driver/navigator Darren Skilton are car #335.

You could do one of two things - A table set up like this...
<table width="580" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" border="0">
<tr><td>Pos.</td>
<td>N°</td>
<td>Name</td>
<td>Make</td>
<td>Time</td>
<td>Variation</td>
<td>Penalty</td></tr>
<tr><td>1</td>
<td>001</td>
<td>DESPRES/</td>
<td>KTM</td>
<td>00:58:10</td>
<td>00:00:00</td>
<td></td></tr></table>
...yields...
Pos. Name Make Time Variation Penalty
1 001 DESPRES/ KTM 00:58:10 00:00:00
<table> starts the table (you can specify the width like I did and some other variables), <tr> starts a row, <td> starts a cell, and a forward slash ('/') in front of the table, tr or td part of the tag described closes that tag.

I love seeing those huge Kamaz trucks. Maybe we can get a stadium series in the USA. :-)

A lot of iveco this year. That is my favorite part too, but it really doesn't get much coverage.

"The Dakar Rally has moved on, gained in maturity and safety"

What a joke! 2 boys died yesterday and today after being run over by a car and a truck…
