Each year, so-called "Class B" dealers provide some 42,000 dogs to laboratory and veterinary research, their nurturing and treatment prior to sale regulated by the federal Department of Agriculture.
But the kennels are many, and the inspectors limited in number. Abuse, according to the documentary "Dealing Dogs" (9 p.m. Tuesday, HBO), is widespread, sometimes involving kennel operators who not only mistreat the animals, but obtain their stock from pet thieves.

And I thought kennel conditions on shelter dogs were rough! Why is it that so few people seem to care about animals and can't even give them a minimum of decent care?

The dealer, who's also a minister at a local church
I guess he felt that God was not providing.......sickening to say the least. What is even sadder is the length of time it takes to process these cases.

I have no idea except there must be a part of their soul that is missing

Reading about this is like reading about the Islamofascists beheading another innocent hostage. It's so sickening, I don't even intend to watch the documentary, just as I don't intend to watch another of their beheading tapes.
To: libstripper
I won't watch it either but I wanted to make people aware and provide the e-mail address of the Dept. of Agriculture

And as bad as this is, it isn't anywhere near as bad as what may happen to the poor creatures once they get to the labs for which they are destined.
I am not opposed in any way to using animals for research purposes, but it can be done with a minimum of cruelty.

I did my graduate work at a large medical school. While working in the labs I saw many abuses. Oddly, the abuses were not by evil sadistic dog-kicking redneck types but by doctors who just weren't thinking. It never occurred to them that the creatures they were experimenting on had feelings as intense as theirs. These labs were regularly inspected, too, and passed with no trouble.

My understanding is PETA has been on this for a long time. It is hard to stop things that are so profitable. In one presentation, and I think this was a PETA film, a seller of stolen dogs was bragging to the lab buyer that they were spoiled pet dogs that had been taken good care of and are trusting and easy to handle.

Oh, I know that, and I didn't mean to imply otherwise. It's just that some of these pings are such heartbreakers, I almost don't even want to click on the thread. Call me an emotional coward, but that kind of thing just cuts me to pieces.
