A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.
Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.
Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.
NO VERBAL ATTACKS! NO NAME CALLING! NO BASHING! THE OVERWEIGHT! NO NASTY PICTURES POSTED! This will be a thread about getting healthy and no attacks will be tolerated.

Thank you for your interesting request. I was thinking about what to give up for Lent and finally made the decision to give up carbs which I thought was going to be the heardest sacrifice I have ever done during Lent. Well I can tell you that since Ash Wednesday my stomach has gone down a lot. I am in the Navy so I was never "out of the Navy's regs", but those rediculous new government regs that they changed for some reason a couple years ago has my BMI pretty high. Anyway, I was 180 and now about 170. Now I understand that is not a lot of weight, but the overall feel of my body I can tell and when I look in the mirror I can tell also. Oh I am on 5'8.

WOW!!!! Since when? 8 miles on treadmill or outside. Also all at once or a few times throughout the day. 8 miles would be about 2 1/2 hours. That is amazing if you do it all at once.

she reminds me I have a lot to be thankful for, even when my fat pants don't fit!Very true. Can you believe she started her whole thing with one class in her church basement?

but the overall feel of my body I can tell and when I look in the mirror I can tell also. That is the most important thing, I think. More important then the # on the scale.

My cholesterol DOUBLED on Atkins (I was losing 3 lbs per week, so I let myself go overboard on fats).
But I changed gears to reduce fat, and eat more whole grains, and I have kept it all off, lost a bit more around the middle, and expect good test results shortly.
The doc wanted to put me on nasty meds, but I opted for diet change.
Anyone wanting sensible science and real inspiration to weight loss should read Micheal Fumento's "Fat of the Land". He's a great conservative science journalist, and the book is worth a read.

Oh, OK.
I heard Dr Manny on FNC say the other day that these cortisol things don't work.
Maybe there will be folks on the list who will have had experience with cortisol.

I'm interested. Read the first 100 comments and will be back later.

I'm big on Matt Furey. Found his website on Ann Coulter's site. He charges a lot for his products, but if you are internet savvy you can find his exercises for free.
His bodyweight exercises are extremely challenging and don't take a lot of time or equipment - and extremely effective.
His books are Combat Conditioning and Combat Abs.
I, too, and one of the Furey faithful. His books are not cheap, but then again, his stuff really works and you will actually use it. The guy is a conservative, and really knows what he is doing. Mrs. B and I use his stuff almost every day, and we have gotten in incredible shape, both looking like we did in our teens, having lost 50 pounds of fat between us.

My hardest day without carbs is Friday because of no meat on Friday for Catholics. You should see me trying to search for food. I actually had two salads today w/out meat but some cheese on it and at that for lunch and dinner. Fun...

need to spot tone the belly muscles!
I know I'm sounding like an advertisement, but you should take my word, and visit Matt Furey's website. His "Combat Abs" will work wonders for you as it has for me and the Mrs. It's expensive for a book, but cheap for great health and good looks.
(And NO crunches or situps required!)

YES! Is there going to be a PING list?
I've just started reading Drs. Michael DeBakey's & Antonio Gotto's book "The Living Heart" for inspiration.
Need to turn inspiration into action and would love any support. I'd also be happy to share what I learn with others who are like-minded about health issues!

Patches are too hard. Use Zyban!!! It will work plus you don't just quit cold turkey, but trust me by the third week you don't even desire a cigarette. It seems like you are do too much too soon. I would just do one thing and than another etc. You sound like you are doing a complete life change. good luck to you, but that is hard to do.

The "Combat" is a marketing term. The key is they they build functional strength and athleticism.

Atkins has to be a way of life. You can not go off and not gain the weight back. Just increase your carbs and eat only the accepted foods.
For me, the key was that it entirely takes you out of your habits, and gives you the immediate reward of weight loss.
Then, you just don't add back the crap into your diet. Not just the sugar crap, but the white or refined carbs.
I must say, short grain (Calrose) brown rice is a sublime joy!
