Woman Mauled By Dog [Pitbull]

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - A Tacoma woman is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after being mauled by a pit bull Friday afternoon.

Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Scott Smith said the woman in her 60s was walking by an apartment complex on 212th Street when the dog jumped over a small deck fence and attacked her.

"It was really awful," said Kathryn Goddard, who saw the attack. The dog "just wouldn't let go and kept shaking the lady."

Kathryn's mom, Dawn Goddard, also saw it happen. "I looked down right below my window and was watching this dog chewing on this woman's head," she said.

Smith said the dog dragged the woman about 50 feet down a hill and was clawing at and biting her head and legs for several minutes.

Dawn said the dog's owner was frantically trying to get control of the pit bull. "She was beating on the dog, she was doing everything she could possibly do to get that dog off of this other woman," she said. "That dog was not going to listen to anyone or any thing."

A resident in the apartment complex called 911 and police arrived and managed to distract the dog and get it to stop biting the woman.

But when the dog charged at police an officer shot the dog once. "Clearly this dog was going to attack the officer," Smith said. "So the officer did shoot the dog."

The dog ran back to its owner, who was able to get the pit bull on a leash, but Smith said the dog then began attacking the owner.

Snohomish County animal control officers arrived and took the dog to a veterinarian where it was euthanized after the owner gave permission.

The dog's owner was taken to a local hospital to be treated for bites. Smith said the woman who was attacked and dragged was expected to recover from her injuries and would be spending the night at Harborview in Seattle.

The pit bull was about two years old, and Smith said there were no previous reports of problems with the animal.

here's just one report from Canton, Ohio. Not a very big city.
Pit bull owners guilty in attacks

POSTED: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 11:37:32 AM
UPDATED: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 12:01:34 PM
CANTON—Three city pit bull owners are guilty of failing to prevent their dogs from attacking other people.

Michael Petry, 21, whose pit bull mauled a 13-month-old boy, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony child endangering charge.

The child suffered numerous puncture wounds to his face, head and shoulder, county prosecutors said. He needed nearly 200 stitches to repair the damage.

The boy was in the living room of his Canton home Oct. 14 when the pit bull began biting him.

Petry faces up to five years in prison when sentenced next month.

The boy’s mother, Victoria Wyatt, 19, also faces charges. She was able to rescue the boy. Petry was not home at the time.

In a second case, Ruth Garaux, 38, pleaded guilty to two felony charges for not confining her pit bull-boxer mix and other dogs.

She admitting letting her four dogs loose Aug. 24 while visiting friends. They mauled Damon Dale, 47, as he went to his mailbox, investigators said.

The 26-year-old owner of a pit bull involved in a third attack was sentenced to 58 days house arrest for two misdemeanor charges of failing to restrain the dog.

Kelli Rhynes’ dog got out of a pen on Oct. 11. The animal chased an 11-year-old and pulled him off his bike.

I'm 45 years old and have never had my dogs attack anyone they shouldn't. If my dog were to attack an innocent the police wouldn't make it do the scene before I put my own animal down. This is common sense, not some "morality" that has to be regulated and legislated. I agree, many people shouldn't own dogs....then again many people shouldn't have children either.....I don't see any FR people calling for that though, at least not yet.

Soooo, after your dog had killed some one, or, if they're lucky, just been mauled, you would kill the dog. A bit late, I would think! Again, what were these dogs bred to do?

I'm sorry, but if your dog rips someone's face off I think you deserve the same. I've had dogs all my life and how they act are direct reflections of thier owners...hence all of my Dobermans have been sarcastic, loving, and lazy...but never violent.

Try it on someone else. Unless you jumped my fence or...I kid you not....cut the lock and open the gate, with two dogs screaming in your face, my dogs won't bite you. By the way, the moron that cut the lock was sitting next to the gate, in a fetal position, with two happy watchdogs laying on the ground smiling, when I arrived home...the moron wasn't bitten, probably because he was too afraid to run. The cops thought it was humorous but didn't want to upset the dogs....

I'd say you've been pretty lucky. So far! I've had two friends attacked by pit bulls. See my #23 (I think that's the right number) Again, what were these dogs bred to do?

I guess I'll answer my own question, since no one else seems to want to.
"
In 1835 the British Parliament outlawed bull baiting, a sadistic gambling game in which bulldogs were used to attack and harass bulls brought to market with the dubious intention of tenderizing the meat. The dog would assault the bull, avoid the stomping hooves and slashing horns, grab a tender nose or ear, and hang on until the bull collapsed. Commoners and royalty alike sought diversion from the violence and diseases of their day by attending these bloody spectacles until a public outcry forced Parliament to take a stand.

Once bull baiting was banned, dog breeders who appreciated the fierceness, courage, and tenacity of the bull dogs turned their attentions to breeding dogs for dog fighting. They began with the bull dog, mixed in some terrier blood, and produced the Bull and Terrier, a dog that met all of their expectations. The Bull and Terrier was bred for aggression to other dogs, unrelenting bravery, a high pain threshold, a willingness to fight to the end, and an affection for people."
As an aside, when I informed my insurance man that I had a large dog (Briard), he told me not to tell him that!

I don't own pitbulls, I own a little curly tailed 120 lb. Anatolian Shepherd (known as a Kangal) and momma keeps the 140lb Rottweiler with her in the city. Both breeds can be banned if good socialists have their way....that would be YOU. And I live in the sticks now, the city has too many morons that can't understand why a dog might bark at them....

Correct. Momma was turned down (by one insurance company) for insurance because she had the Rottweiler. They never heard of a Kangal, so that was OK.....the most aggressive dog of the two is the Kangal....so much for informed decisions, heh?

Yeah! Right! I'm a socialist. Bwahahahaha! Gettin' a bit testy aren't you? I've had experience with American Staffs, and those experiences have been bad! We have very different points of view on this subject, but calling me a socialist? Take your ball and go home!

Ban a breed, ban a gun...what's the difference? I've already pointed out on this thread that this is a MSM "scare" story, just like SUV's or assault weapons. Fewer people are killed by dogs, all dogs, in the US than by lightning...

What say you? I noticed the other "ban the breeds" advocates can't seem to find their keyboards....

Have you ever seen a Jack Russell racing trial?

It is the only dog event I have observed where the dogs are required to be muzzled. They regularly attack each other unprovoked during the race.

So what happened to my friend Doug, and what happened to another friend's daughter are just scare stories? Right. These are dogs we're talkin' about. Not guns. Not people. Dogs are a reasonably intellegent animal, but they're still animals! These dogs were bred to fight. Bred to hang on till death do them part. You can't change the breeding by wishful thinking. It's as if you were to breed lima beans for a few centuries to be the best lima beans, but some expect them to taste like strawberries! It's in the breeding. Dogs can be great around their families, and be very dangerous to strangers. So one day your dog slips out the back door, and encounters a child riding their bike. Attack? Maybe not.

Jack Russell's are mean, that's I why included them in my list of "DOGS THAT SHOULD BE BANNED". I'll never forget my German Shepard, at a horse show, with this little JRT attached to his butt, and him standing there going...."Dad, can I kill it....". JRT's have the heart and aggressiveness of dogs 10 times their size.....i.e. PitBulls.
