He clearly doesn't have any idea of what he's getting into. A placenta for a full-term baby is about the size of a dinner plate, and 1.5 to 2 inches thick. And the cord is long! And it's fibrous and rubbery.

Not just that. Believe me, you take a look at that bloody mess lying curled up in a basin and the last thing you want to do is eat it. Speaking from personal experience here. Guts are not attractive.

I like that the British press has no qualms about calling it the "cult of Scientology". The American press never calls Scientology a cult.

Sick, but I've heard others say the same thing... not the whole thing, but a nibble on it. I have NO idea why.

The placenta and umbilical cord are excellent sources of stem cells. Really, parents should have them frozen for future use. Far more useful than blenderized-embryo stem cells (which have not, as yet, been shown to have any therapeutic value) and no niggling conscience qualms about blenderizing babies...

--rancher leaves for Dodge, knowing that the foreman is trustworthy and has attended to birth of calves, etc. Gets back, wife is fine, nine pound baby is fine--asks foreman "How everything went with the birth?" Foreman -embarrassed-reluctantly relates that everything went fine, but I sure had a hard time getting her to eat the afterbirth---

(it's a farm joke that generally requires foreknowledge that even cattle will generally eat their own own placenta--)

It's a cultural thing, having to do with establishing where a child's roots are.
