Today's protest was purportedly designed by organizers to demonstrate the economic impact of a day without immigrants. Certainly, here in LA there were massive protests, but trade continued at a fairly brisk pace from my observations. BONUS: The freeways had the lightest traffic in years.
Hubby and I signed the contract (and paid the money) for a new sunroom and we bought lawn furniture. Total=$28647.29
$3.50 on coffee.
if the freeways are empty, that means a lot of people didn't buy gas
For some reason, it always seems to fall on the 5th of May. :=) I think it's this Friday.
Somehow, I think a lot of us gringos won't be celebrating it at our local Mexican restaurants. You want a day without illegals?? Fine, try a month or two without customers!
$350 on ebay for a DVD/VHS recorder with HDMI upconversion.
$200+ for plumbing/electrical supplies.
$150 on two 5' Dwarf Hinoki Cypress [it *is* May Day, ya know]
$44 on large pots for the shrubs.
Hubby spent a couple hundred on various body/paint supplies for the motorcycles...not sure of the exact total.
$6 for the June issue of 'American Iron'.
$8 for notepads.
[and another $8 on Hershey's Special Dark chocolate chips]....LOL!
The illegals are just taking off the days Americans refuse to.
We also ate at an Italian restaurant where the owner, a black man, informed us that "he didn't have time for that illegal mess". Everyplace was busy. I think most everyone, "Gringos", were doing their part.
We did go around and post notes on the doors of 3 Mexican restaurants that were closed, telling them we wouldn't be back.

I wonder if there are statics on how many illegals did not pick up their welfare check on may 1, how many did not go to emergency clinic, the number of hit and run accidents, stabbings, muggings etc.
It would be interesting to compare may 1 2006 to a typical day in CONUS.
I have resorted to washing my car (Lexus) at a car wash where I use the sprayer and foam brush and can usually clean the car for $3. We have a vaccuum in our garage. So, I also gain in the calorie burning department! I have a difficult time watching the automated businesses abuse of labor so I rarely support them (At one location I get a free wash with oil change).
Some of our local liberal restaurants closed and got media coverage. "Couldn't get flower deliveries and afraid of low employee turnout." Ha! A day without flowers on their tables would just be too much to take! Probably most of their waiters needed new piercings or tattoos!
We had a wonderful dinner party for 5 and I splurged by serving prime rib eye steaks.
I went to see United 93, saw some real American heros.
I went out and blew about $160 at the Lowes Garden Center. I figured they would be hurting most, except for maybe Home Depot. And I just can't work up any warm fuzzies for Home Depot, no matter how hard I try.
I spent about $100-included a trip to Wal Mart for a bag of Rold Gold pretzels-(they were out of the wheel spray paint I neede in the Auto dept-damn Bush!)
I think I'll go to Kim Son, a Vietnamese restaurant here in Oak Ridge. I know the folks who work there are legal immigrants, the church I used to go to sponsored them and helped move them here from one of the boat people camps almost twenty-five years ago. They and their families are awesome examples of what legal immigration is all about.

I did what I could- stopped at the grocery store on the way home and spent $20.
I will say it was just as busy as usual.
The only businesses I noticed closed were the insulation place next door to where I work, and a construction site I pass on the way home.
What struck me funny was many of these businesses shown on TV that closed were hispanic. I think the main economic impact will be a day-short paycheck.
I bought a new Sig Sauer yesterday, and 150 rds of ammo to go with it.
I bought a chair (made in the US) at Pottery Barn for $1350.
We got one of the prefabbed sunrooms (12x15) a couple yrs ago, and we love it. Hope Juan and Manual don't come to build it.
This whole pro-illegal alien day didn't get much play here in Hawaii, but I spent about $40 today: 20 for dinner and 20 for a new trumpet case.
Golf Galaxy, $129 for balls, 2 FJ gloves and new head covers.
Spent the evening spinning and calibrating my new balls.
No jokes please.
