Is seeing the DaVinci Code a sin?
Southern Nebraska Register ^

Could I have inadvertently committed a mortal sin by buying and reading The Da Vinci Code?

One cannot commit any sin “inadvertently.” A mistake cannot be a sin. Sin always is a deliberate act of one’s will. For a sin to be mortal or spiritually deadly, the matter involved has to be grave (or perceived to be grave), and ...

Why not engage me in conversation? When you evade a quite simple question, it shows you have little confidence that your notions can hold up to scrutiny.

Would you put your 5 year old on trial? Why or why not?

We cannot sin without being aware that we are sinning.

Well, Uzzah certainly got a quick surprise when he tried to save the Ark. (2 Samuel 6,7).

I'd say putting more money in Dan Brown's pocket for this tripe would be a sin.

2 Saumuel 6:6-7

6:6. And when they came to the floor of Nachon, Oza put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it: because the oxen kicked and made it lean aside.

6:7. And the indignation of the Lord was enkindled against Oza, and he struck him for his rashness: and he died there before the ark of God.

Only priests were allowed to touch the Ark. I think you can file this one under...The road to Hell is paved with good intentions...

While the Levites were supposed to be the only ones who could touch the Ark, Uzzah was obeying his authority in David and ostensibly believed that he was doing God's work in saving the Ark. Is it your position that he was condemned to an eternity in Hell for this?

My contention is man's ways are not God's ways. If Oza believed in Christ and repented he did not go to Hell.

God, Himself, struck Oza down because of the rashness of his action. Who am I to argue with God's judgement?

Amen to that.

Hmmm...yes, sin is "missing the mark," although yes, most sin is not even pointing at the target. I intend to see it and do not consider it a sin.

Oh, the derivation of the word "sin" in Greek is "missing the mark." See http://divine-love.org/essays/ftnote48.html

Although I heard a sermon once where the pastor said that most sin was not pointing at the target of goodness and just missing, but rather not pointing at the target at all.

So, I disagree that sin must be guided by bad intent.

I have a habit of responding to the most recent post when I mean to respond to several in the thread.

Just saw the movie (hadn't read the book). Much ado about nothing. Not as bad as the reviewers said, but this is getting everyone in an uproar? (Very surprisingly, it was a young, large audience and a few people clapped at the end. Don't know why. Comments by people exiting were mixed at best.) Recommendation: Watch it on TV. Protests by about 7 Catholic old chubby women and one young guy who was suprisingly well informed. (The women were adamant; they would not see the movie or read the book; they didn't want such evil in their lives). They all carried identical signs saying that they rejected the Da Vinci Code with a large picture of Jesus. I suggested that better signs would say, "You've seen the fiction, let's talk about the truth". They loved the idea, and said that "if I truly believed in Jesus, I would have such a sign made and join them tomorrow." They left after prayer (mumbled) and the news crews left.

It would be for me. It would be contributing to blasphemy in my mind, and I couldn't not do it intentionally. Assenting to such a sin would be something I couldn't do in good conscience.

But outside of explaining why I think it's sinful, I leave it to you do decide these issues yourself. But if you are a serious Christian, IMHO you need to think about it carefully.

Thanks Pattlefish,
I saw it last night to and found it dry and boring. Maybe because there has been so much hype and scare mongering, I expected more. The acting was dry, the music was put in all at the wrong times, and the plot was so cut up for the film, it lacked suspense.

I agree, wait for it to be on TV or just read the book.

No, the term mortal sin does not mean unforgiveable, simplistically, it means a sin that if you commit and die before asking for forgiveness for, you go down instead of up when you die.

No, that is not what he is saying. You can not inadveredtly commit a sin, because to be culpable you have to make a conscious choice to sin. God does not have a computerized check-off list. He does know what happens in a man's heat though. That is why one can not judge.
