Hello fellow freepers. First, I apologize for the vanity but I need a bit of help. My church just purchased a computer and a projector to use during our worship services. We had man come down and hook everything up, install all the software etc. and everything worked fine. Now we can,t get the projector to project. Everything with the computer, programs and all the connections is fine but for some reason we just can't figure out how to get the projector to turn on. Is there a setting that needs to be changed in the computer in order for the powerpoint images to be displayed through the projector(or even to be turned on period)?
I appreciate any help you all can give. And please, I know a little bit about computers but I am very tech savy so a run down in the "powerpoint for dummies" format would be much appreciated.

I am not really sure. The projector is mounted on the ceiling. Hmmm...guess I will have to look tonight. I don't think the light bulb is on as nothing is being projected onto the screen but I also didn't notice if there is a blinking light on the thing. Will check it out.

I had this same exact problem before. It may be the wall. Try aiming the projector at a different wall and it may work.
Okay, in all seriousness, I believe there's a combination of buttons you need to press, in order to receive the projection. For my computer and projector it is Shift + the F3 key. After pressing Shift + F3, I then will see on the wall what I see on the screen. In fact, sometimes the screen itself is blank until Shift + F3 is pressed.

Another weird little nuance is that some projectors must have their 'On' buttons depressed and HELD DOWN to get them to finally project.

I don't feel bad, just a bit frustrated. It should work. I did work. But it isn't working now. I am confident we will figure it out...eventually. I just wish I had a bit more knowledge when it comes to computers and now projectors.
"I did work" should have read: "It did work" but technically, since I couldn't get the thing to work I guess "I" didn't work either lol.
My husband says that the guy that set all this up has the projector set up like a second monitor. It is also hooked up with an s-cable. We will probably have to get this guy on the phone and have him walk us through the procedure to get this thing running. I have never had a second monitor hooked up to any of my computers so I am clueless on how to fix this.
I do have some naive suggestions (that you've probably already gotten).
If you don't have manufacturers manuals for the projector (and for the computer),
get to the websites for them and download those (usually .pdf) or
check for FAQs for them.
I'd think the manufacturer(s) probably have troubleshooting guides
to lessen the need to deal with phone-calls for help.

The nature of the connection REALLY matters here. Are you trying to have a picture on both your desktop monitor AND the projector? If so, you need to have both of them connected at the same time to your computer.
I always use a laptop, so there is no confusion - I switch from one to the other, or both at once, with shift-F7.
Your computer might have an on-board graphics adapter, a plug-in video adapter card, or both. Whatever you have, you need appropriate drivers for each, plus cables to connect each if you will use both at once. If you will use only one or the other, you need to switch the cable with power OFF, then turn it on and let it find and install the hardware driver it needs.
This may be a really stupid question, but is there by chance a screen saver activated that comes on automatically after a few minutes and might it override any instructions the projector is supposed to receive - and if so, it ought to be turned off.
We had a lap top but the man who set up and installed all the software ended up advising us to purchase a desktop pc. This was after he spent about 5 hours trying to get everything to work. I don't really know what kind of connections have been made but everthing WAS working before this guy left our church and now it isn't. I just hate this kind of stuff lol. It almost always turns out to be something so simple that you end up saying "Now why didn't I think of that?!"
From PowerPoint HELP:
The computer desktop image isn't projected onto the screen. This is usually caused by a lack of signal transmission between the computer and the projector.
Turn off the projector and the computer. Turn on the projector first, and then turn on the computer. If you are using a laptop, you might need to manually activate or deactivate the laptop video port in order for your laptop to send a signal to the projector.
Notes Most laptop computers require a function key or software command to activate the laptop video output signal. Locate a function key labeled CRT/LCD or a function key with a monitor symbol on it. Press and hold down the function key and the labeled function key simultaneously.
Learn about activating the external video port of a laptop computer.
Some laptops provide three states for video port activation:
State 1: Activation of laptop display only
State 2: Activation of external video port only
State 3: Activation of both the laptop display and the external video port simultaneously
The command for activating the video port will toggle through these three options. If activation of the video port does not cause an image to be projected, wait 45 seconds and then press the function keys again.
Make sure the button is in the O-N position...
That is not a stupid question. I will definatly check that out. I have had things on my pc go haywire and couldn't figure out what in the world was wrong and it turned out to be the screen saver program. Thanks :)
Right click on a blank area of the desktop, see if theres a choice for "display >" with an option for the projector as display choice, if so, then choose it.
if not then click Properties from that window that appeared when you right clicked the desktop, click settings tab and then under display select the projector
try that. see how it goes.
I wouldnt go tinkering with it unless you KNOW what you are doing, it will only make it worse and better write down ANY changes you make so you can revert them back in case the changes you try dont have any effect.
