Brazil Mourns As Anorexia Claims Another Model's Life
Drudge ^ | 11/16/06 | Andrei Khalip

The mother of a Brazilian fashion model who died from complications of anorexia has made an emotional appeal for parents to take better care of aspiring young models.

The death of Ana Carolina Reston, 21, follows growing criticism of the use of underweight models in the fashion world, an issue given new significance after the death in August of Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos of heart failure during a fashion show in Montevideo.

Reston died on Tuesday in a Sao Paulo hospital from a generalized infection caused by anorexia, an eating disorder in which sufferers obsessively deprive themselves of food in pursuit of an ultra-slim look.

Reston weighed only 88 pounds (40 kg) and was about 5 feet 8 inches tall. Doctors consider the weight normal for a 12-year-old girl about 5 feet tall.

"Take care of your children ... no money is worth the life of your child, not even the most famous (fashion) brand is worth this," her mother, Miriam, told O Globo newspaper.

She said her daughter had been trying to help her family with the money she made as a model. Miriam spoke on national television and to local media to highlight the tragedy.

She said she had pleaded with her daughter to eat more and to see a doctor. "She would reply, 'Mummy, don't mess me around,'" Miriam told O Estado de S.Paulo.

O Dia tabloid carried a picture of the dark-haired, big-eyed girl in lingerie on its front-page with the headline "Dictatorship of skinny look kills a model."

I personally believe that Nicole Ritchie's skinny act is for publicity's sake. She's a bizarre looking mediocrity who has gotten tons of magazine covers simply because she won't eat.

That said, I do believe that anorexia is a real mental disorder and it must be heartbreaking to watch someone fade away by their own doing and you cannot stop them.

The models think they're attractive. Personally I think bony women are horrible looking. Same with bony men.

Because they want women to be walking clothes hangers.

I once saw a girl in Atlanta that had a body like this..she was SO skinny, and the skin so taut on her face, it was like looking at a skull with a thin layer of skin over it..truly disgusting..I told her she needed something to eat and in a hurry..she showed me a candy bar with one bite taken and told me it was her dinner, she didn't want to get fat (she threw out the rest of the bar)..that woman could have gained 50 pounds and STILL been skinny..

Who decided to let gay men decide the "ideal" woman? Is it any wonder why the fashion industry wants their female models to look like young boys?

I was diagnosed with anorexia in high school and I weighed 120 lbs. at 5'7". I was borderline anemic by then.

I don't know why, but I got to where I couldn't make myself eat without horrible guilt feelings. Not even a lifesaver or a mint. Once in awhile, if I got dizzy or passed out, I'd eat a sandwich. Usually when a friend would make me.

I weigh a lot more than that now that I quit smoking and had all the plumbing yanked out!

The models think they're attractive.

Actually, the ones who are truly anorexic think they're fat. It's an awful disorder.

I know someone very dear to me who had this problem...same guilt for eating anything. We nearly lost her, but 5 years later she is doing fine. We are looking forward to Thanksgiving. I am so very glad that you are doing well.
