A 4-year-old boy died after he was mauled by two pit bulls this afternoon in his east Harris County neighborhood, authorities said.
The boy, who was not identified, was walking beside another child, who was on a bicycle, around 1:30 p.m. in the 8900 block of C.E. King Parkway when the dogs approached the boys, Harris County sheriff's deputies said.
The boy on the bike jumped off and was able to run away, but the other boy was bitten in the face by the dogs, said Sgt. Noel Araguz. The boy's mother ran outside to help him, but could not get the dogs off her son. The boy was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he died at about 3 p.m.
Araguz said the attack lasted several minutes and the dogs were still mauling the boy when deputies arrived on the scene. The dogs were distracted by the lights and sirens of the deputies' cars.
As deputies approached the dogs, they were aggressive toward them and had to be shot, Araguz said. One of the dogs was killed and the other wounded.
Neighbors told authorities they thought the dogs were strays and no one has yet claimed to own the dogs.

Dogs of Peace strike again
Sad. Poor baby.
Just d*mn...
Prayers up for the family of that poor boy.
Thats great!
I submit there were two fatalities in this dog attack. The mother who witnessed the death of her child in such a gruesome manner will never know life again.
Tragic! I am not familiar with the street but I'll bet there are hundreds of pit bulls on Houston's east side.
Kind of shocking. I figured the story was about a couple of killer Shih Tsus.
Very nice. "Dogs of Peace". I like that.
Not much mystery why pitbulls are the dogs of choice for drug dealers.
I cant even imagine...
God help that childs mother.

Pit Bull owners are idiots. It's like owning a rattlesnake.
Stray dogs, particularly large ones, are a tragedy waiting to happen.
If the neighbors were aware of these dogs before the attack,
they had the responsibility to get them removed from the area.
There was another horrible incident just a few days ago....
"the kindergartener was found shortly after the attack, his facial features and upper body had been destroyed by the pack of at least five dogs" link
Yes, I thought it was bound to be Poodles, or Shelties, or Spaniels which had attacked the boy. And yet it was Pitt Bulls.
It was this one:
There should be no law against shooting a dog running loose. Maybe then, more Texans would keep their animals confined.
What in the hell is a 4 year old doing out walking with another kid in that neighborhood by themselves.
I saw the news report this afternoon. The attack happened in a trailer park. One of the neighbors said one (or both) of the dogs snarled at her a few days ago, and she reported it to the office.
The reporter said the dogs appeared "healty" and "well fed". You can bet the owner will not come forward.
