A man who demonstrated a pattern of sexually intimidating women while wearing spandex pants has been sentenced to life in prison plus six years.

Michael Scott Long, 37, Brooklyn Park, Minn., was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole last Wednesday on conviction of one count of second-degree sexual assault by use of force.

Judge Edward F. Vlack also handed down a six year sentence on one count of false imprisonment during the Nov. 22 hearing.

A 12-person jury found a Minnesota man guilty of second-degree sexual assault and false imprisonment Tuesday morning after a short deliberation.

Michael Scott Long, 37, 2630 Brookdale Lane, Brooklyn Park, was convicted of the two felony charges just before noon in Judge Edward F. Vlack's courtroom.

The jury took a little more than one hour to return a verdict in the trial, which started Monday morning.

Long, who was known to traipse about in Spandex pants and engage in indecent conduct in public places, was charged following an incident at the Country Inn Suites in River Falls Oct. 24, 2005.

The criminal complaint said Long confronted an 18-year-old woman at the front desk while wearing white Spandex pants and embraced her from the front and the back without her consent.

Long has several other cases pending from incidents in Hudson in April and June 2003, and in New Richmond in November 2005.

I wonder if he'll wear that Spandex in prison? I can just see the look of joy when he gets to meet his new cellmate "Tiny".

I'm confused. Is it the "embracing" that is considered false imprisonment?

The guy sounds like scum, but 6 years seems a little steep.

WTF - that doesn't make any sense!

"...one count of second-degree sexual assault by use of force."

The story is sorely lacking in detail.

Something is missing.

Just a few short years ago a friend of mine got shot in Florida and the perp got house arrest. Then the perp, within two weeks, violated the house arrest and got only 4 years.

Then the perp got out and robbed a bank. Then he did a couple of more years, got out and moved to Kalifornia and is fully rehabilitated, according to his probation officer. No one ever lies to a probation officer, especially not gang-banging murderer attempting bank robbers.

Oh, and on the original charge the perp was allowed to plead guilty to aggravated assault as his claim in court was that it was a case of mistaken identity and he actually meant to kill another guy.

this is the state of the courts today.

The wearing of spandex pants ought to have gotten him big punishment all by itself.

People are making light of this, but the point is, did this guy get life in prison for hugging a woman? If he had a suit and tie on people would be outraged and asking the important questions. I see no rape charges, or murder for that matter – what’s the story…?

Life in prison for one count of hugging a woman without her consent at the front desk of the Country Inn Suites in River Falls, Wisconsin, while wearing white Spandex pants. This is justice?

How about spitting on the sidewalk in River Falls? Punishable by death?

As someone else said, we must not be getting the whole story here? He must have a long history of such behavior and refused to alter his behavior?

According to my understanding of criminal law—derived from repeated viewings of episodes of Law and Order—a person charged with one criminal act can't be tried, judged guilty, and sentenced on the basis of prior bad acts. As I read the story, he was sentenced to life in prison for a single act of hugging (unwanted hugging, yes, and so, if he did it, a crime, no question). The sentence appears not to fit the crime based on the information we have before us.
