Florida vaults to No. 2 in BCS, will play Ohio State for national title
LA Times ^ | 12/3/06 | Chris Dufresne, Times Staff Writer

There isn't going to be a rematch.

No. 1 Ohio State will play No. 2 Florida, not Michigan, for the Bowl Championship Series national title on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

According to a BCS source, Florida moved from fourth to second today ahead of No. 3 Michigan in the final BCS standings.

An official announcement will come this evening in a televised unveiling on Fox.

The news means that USC will play Michigan, not Louisiana State, in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

LSU had pre-sold more than 42,000 tickets in advance of making its first-ever Rose Bowl appearance, but UCLA's upset win over previously No. 2 USC on Saturday, coupled with Florida's win over Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference championship game, changed the final pairings.

The BCS bowl lineup is now expected to be:

Rose: USC vs. Michigan.

Sugar: Notre Dame vs. LSU.

Orange: Louisville vs. Wake Forest.

Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Boise State.

Florida's jump over No. 3 Michigan, which was idle Saturday and has not played since a three-point loss to No. 1 Ohio State on Nov. 18, likely will cause more uproar in BCS circles.

I really don't think Florida wins yesterday without that bonehead play of trying to field a punt over his shoulder with five defenders bearing down on him. That turned the game around.

I agree that the momentum really shifted after that play. The Hogs scored 21 unanswered to take the lead after being down 17-0, their defense forces another punt, and then that one bonehead hands the Gators seven points and the lead again doing the one thing a punt receiver should never do: start backpedalling after signalling for a fair catch on the ten yard line. I couldn't believe it! Definitely the play of the game.

"...you sissies who have to cry your way to the top..."

For argument's sake, I assume you are talking about the Gators, since my team wouldn't have been helped by any crying this year (since they lost to the Gators, Tigers, and Hawgs).

UF deserves it; they didn't cry their way to the top. They earned it from winning the SEC championship and also have to thank UCLA for pulling its own stellar defensive performance against USC.

All Michigan had to do was win when they played OSU and all of this part would be an afterthought, they didn't.

There's always next year!

Besides with Nutt we get wonderful ESPN headlines like, "Nutt To Replace Johnson With Dick Against Cocks."

LOL!

2-10 Illinois put the hurt on the Buckeyes and nearly spanked them.

You can bet that film is going to get a workout in Gainesville.

I agree that Illinois and Florida are comparable teams, but this time Ohio State is not going to be looking ahead 2 or 3 weeks.

"I agree that Illinois and Florida are comparable teams,"

Well, they both have Ron Zook in common, that's for sure.

LOL! The 2-10 Illini beat the Buckeyes statistically and very nearly beat them.

Ohio State's a great team. No doubt about it. But the Buckeyes can be beaten.

I'm wondering what 50 days off is going to do to them. That's a long time to be relaxed.

BCS does the right thing for once.

Changing it "does the wrong thing for once" would be silly, since it does the wrong thing most of the time. So I gotta stick with the original.

Being a born-and-bred SEC man, I'm happy Florida is getting a shot at the Title. But I wouldn't have been ouraged if Michigan had gotten a rematch. Fact is, both are excellent teams and a persuasive argument can be made for either one's inclusion.

If I -had- to predict a winner, though, I'd have to go with Ohio State. They seem like simply the overhwlmingly better team. Although that's never a guarantee of victory (see "Southern California, University of" - if they had simply done what everyone expected them to do yesterday, then the whole thing would be moot. ;)

I'll enjoy the game. Good luck to OSU players and fans. :)

The smart money has got to be on the Buckeyes.

The Michigan game proved that.

Nail on the head. I personally think OSU should win this one by 10-12 points, and that might be generous given some of the faults of the Fl offense.

But what's right is right here. USC lost, Florida won, and Michigan had a chance to make the whole issue of their appearance or not moot a couple of weeks ago.

Yada yada yada, no the fl gators lost to Alburn a 11th ranked team by 10 , Michigan loses by 3 and you all say the gators earned it. Earned what a chance to cry their way into a game where they will be slautered. Maybe 24 is coming back that night and the coaches of the other teams have better things to do then laugh their way throuh a losing gator game. Face it the best is not playing the best, if it was it would be Ohio State, Michigan!Oh yea did you know when we beat Ohio State we set up a rematch between fl State and Fl so Fl could be champs, or has your memory gone too. So don't tell me, about rematches, you already had one thanks to Michigan! Michigan is still the best!

I wouldn't be surprised if USC claims themselves CO-National Champions if they beat Michigan by more points than did Ohio State. Sorry, USC fans.....just couldn't resist!!!
