Responding to customer requests for less preinstalled software on its machines, Dell will now offer its customers an option to select "no software preinstalled" when purchasing Inspiron notebooks or Dimension desktops. While the option would eliminate much of the software commonly stuffed onto new computers, some would still remain.
Adobe's Reader and a set of Google tools will still be included, as well as antivirus software. In addition, for those who may have not had the option or did not select it at the time of build, Dell will offer those customers an untinstall program to clear off unwanted software.
PING!
Yeah, today at slickdeals.com there was a Dell laptop with optional XP or Vista.
My Dell 2004-2006.

More DRM infection.

And if that’s ZoneAlarm Suite 7, you’d be better
off having an actual virus. I’m about to FORMAT C:
and do a total reinstall because of that garbage.
Dell is letting customers install Windows XP instead of Vista thanks to customer demand. It seems Microsoft's latest isn't burning the house down as expected.
After customer complaints, you can get XP again. Good thing too. Just got a new Dell laptop for work with an OEM Vista install and the thing bluescreens constantly.
Adobe Reader is pretty much required as so many downloads are .pdf files these days. Get rid of Adobe 8 which comes with the machine and download Adobe 7 which is just as good but without the bloatware and spam of version 8.
Yea from Dell. Go to the site and click on notebook or desktop then where it says "Still Looking for Windows XP?" Click it. That takes you into the XP order options. Note: An XP buld will likely delay shipping by about two extra weeks it seems.
For this reason, I go through the extra expense of buying a personal copy of Windows XP. That way, I can reformat my hard drive and install a clean version.
Gee my Mac didn’t come with ANY CRAP on it and all the apps I DID want were already there. And I can run windoze on my Mac if I really need to. Poor Dell... stuck in the 20th century.
This is a smart move on Dell’s part; my main laptop will be up for replacement around the end of the year and I’d be much more likely to go with a system that came without all the OEM-preinstalled junk.
If Dell would also configure the OS better than XP’s default install, I can just about guarantee that I’d buy their laptops for myself and my business.
The PC Decrapifier is designed to remove a specific list unwanted software in an unattended fashion. Before running, the user may select exactly what software should be removed. Currently, it is targeted for use on most Dell machines; however it will theoretically run on anything that has the software listed below.

Yes, dumb people and people afraid of anything new can buy a brand new computer with a six year old OS.
www.oldversion.com
So you like the new Blue Screens?
Yeah, a six year old OS that WORKS and doesn't make your computer run like a drunk pig! ... Dumb like a fox ...
I got to try out a friend's new notebook with Vista, and all those pretty graphics make it run slow as hell.
I had a notebook die recently, so sold it on ebay for parts, so (after of course removing the hard disc to protect my data) I kept the recovery disc and the COA sticker so that I have an extra copy of WinXP in case I need to put it on a new computer at a later date. I have no interest in Visduh.
The SMART people buy what works instead of spending the next year dealing with an OS released too soon with too many bugs in it ala Windows M.E. remember that one? Microsoft CREATED a hate for themselves by such a release without a recall and apology to go with it. They knew M.E. was junk and I'd say they likely know as much about VISTA as well considering the delays then a need for SP1 already. I just bought XP in my new one because XP works and is stable. No re-formats in nearly 5 years. No major crashes.
Based on experience that XP is the most stable OS Microsoft has made then it only makes sense to buy it. Especially when their newest OS leaves a lot to be desired in such areas as compatibility with other software.
One more thing. The SMART people will have little trouble with XP and IF/WHEN Microsoft gets the bugs out of VISTA can then upgrade to it for only $99. Now who's dumb? Microsoft VISTA has many issues including a making Microsoft your Big Brother user agreement. Let market pressure correct it.
