During my last trips to Sri Lanka in the mid 1990’s I saw very large sailing dhows still used in commerce.

There is a nasty civil war going on there now... not likely.
Right off the southernmost tip of India, Kanniyakumari, would be another good place to look - as on the entire shallow area of sea between India and Sri Lanka. I suspect it was once a land bridge.
