Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Spoiler Alert!!)
07/11/07 | Dianna

Please DO NOT read this thread if you have not seen the movie. Even if you have read this book, topics under discussion can affect what you will expect in the last book.

Several pet theories for the Deathy Hallows have, perhaps, been laid to rest by the release of this movie. A number of plot points I had thought were important to the end of the series were completely left out of Order of the Phoenix.

1. There is absolutely NO reference to the cleaning of Grimmauld Place. Thus, any speculation about the locket horcrux being hoarded by Kreacher must be false.

2. The prophecy was never heard in full. The portion of the prophecy which could have referred to Neville instead of Harry was omitted.

3. There was no mention of Percy's estrangement from his family. Percy was shown at Fudge's side at important points, but unless his face was remembered from previous movies, people not reading the book may not have caught that.

There were two plot changes which puzzled me. Cho was the one who gave Dumbledore's Army away, not the unimportant character of Marietta. Also, Sirius, before he falls through the veil calls Harry, "James". I assume these changes have a point, but I don't know what.

There was also no reference to Hermione and Ron being Prefects. There was no Quidditch at all, so Ron would not be on the team.

My reason for asking is that because Dumbledore put so much faith behind Snape, always defending him in the past. If Snape turns out to be evil, it makes Dumbledore look like a fool.

In the forth book, Snape comes out and shows Fudge his tattoo but in the movie, there’s a more sinister ending with Snape shoving his wand in the villains face. I don’t understand where they were going with that.

Also the author tries to show how Snape had a troubled past. I’m not sure if it’s to throw off the reader and make them feel sorry for him all the while she sets him up to be the big bad guy all along.

I just don’t know what to think.

*shrug* There were only 12 people in Jesus’ inner circle.

One of them betrayed him.

As I see it, at least from what I read from the last book and, if the author doesn’t do a turn around, Snape will turn out to be the bad guy and probably killed in the end.

She set him up to be Dumbledore’s good guy in the first story but turns out to be bad at the end.

The only thing I don’t like is having Dumbledore’s quality of giving people a second chance and his good nature being destroyed by Snape. At least Jesus knew and said that Judas would betray him. I know this makes for good reading but I can’t help but shiver at the message it sends to kids.

But this is all pie in sky until the last book comes out and puts it all to rest... At least I hope it does.

One big difference is that without Judas there would be no Chrisianity.

The wizarding world doesn't require the death of Dumbledore to exist or continue existing.

The only thing I don’t like is having Dumbledore’s quality of giving people a second chance and his good nature being destroyed by Snape.

I don't think it was. It was a measure of Dumbledore's belief in redemption that he was willing to die to give another the slim hope of salvation.

That's a good point.

I’ll just have to avoid the threads about it on FR!....

Yep, I wasnt’ that smart with HBP and someone posted about Dumbledore.... oh well, it’s not like I sometimes read the last 2 pages of a book to see where it’s heading. ;)

I don’t think he is evil either. Beside that scene he also had a scene towards the end of HBP where he told Harry that he was not a coward. And he couldn’t be one if he were spying on LV. I just think Snape had a hard time getting over the cool kids bullying him and he held a grudge. I also think he got in with LV and when things went too far, he got out. Sorta like Sirius’ brother.

I’m not sure bullying has anything to do with it...I speculate that Snape was just another guy totally captivated by Lily Evans... there has never been a bad thing said about her... I think we find out in the last book that Snape was devastated that he inadvertently caused her death. He doesn’t like Harry because he looks so much like James, but because he’s Lily’s son, he’s never hurt him either, he even stopped that curse in the last pages of HBP.

Less than 2 weeks till the final truth is known...

;D

There's a site out there, can't remember where it it, that takes the Dumbledore death and funeral scenes and deconstructs them in detail to show the evidence that Dumbledore didn't die.

Beyond Hogwarts: formerly dumbledoreisnotdead.com

Wait.... remember, he appears asleep in a portrait in his old office

Remember, also, he tells Malfoy that there were ways that he could help Malfoy fake his death(and Narcissa's also) so as to protect them from the wrath of Voldy and crew. I would think such ploys would have to involve some elaborate trickery. Certainly a portrait could be enchanted.

I agree with that too, about him loving Lily. I think when Petunia was talking about that “awful” boy, she meant Snape, not James.

Not sure if anyone else mentions this, as I haven’t finished reading posts, but the “W” was for the Weasley’s, who had just set off the fireworks display during the exams, and the books are supposed to be set in the early 90’s, so the references to the poor president at the beginning of book 6 are not about Bush and Blair.
I think they did a good job making the kids invoke the idea of the late 30’s/early 40’s with the cinematography, the posters of Fudge, the newspapers and very often the way they had the kids dressed. (I am a dork, and almost had a degree in costume design, so I always look very critically at costumes!) Yes, they were dressed in “today’s fashions” but the way they would have Neville, for instance, in a zipped cardigan in headshots to make him look more as though he could have been in a movie set during the lead-up to WWII was interesting.
Also, JKR has said many times that she is very interested in the way people handled the growing unease in Europe under Hitler, so it is most definitely (imo) a deliberate reference to WWII and separating people into the camps of “good” and “bad.”

RE: Lily’s eyes, and ignoring Harry’s color—
Did you notice Harry’s eyes turned green when Voldemort was trying to take him over at the end of the movie? I read they didn’t do the eye color in the movie becuase Dan Radcliffe’s eyes were sensitive to the contact lenses. Made me intrested to see the eyes turn very (startling) green during that shot!

I saw it as Sirius was so distracted, and called Harry “James” without remembering exactly who he was with at the time. Xena, I know why you are asking, and I think it was left vague enough that it can go either way in the final story.

I saw that as trying to make Luna a love interest, too, and it made me mad! :) (Way too much time on my hands, but I actually clapped when I read book six and read about Ginny and Harry!) I asked my friend who went with me (never read a Potter book) and she didn’t see the love interest angle, so maybe it was just there to torture those of us that are on the lookout for romance? :)

Well, Ginny seemed obviously miffed about Harry and Cho in this movie,

I noticed that. It was very obvious. Did you also notice that Neville and Luna ran around the Department of Mysteries holding hands?

I thought Evanna Lynch was great as Luna. She really captured the "space cadet" image I envisioned from the book. She's from Ireland but her accent seemed almost Canadian. Very non-Irish and non-British.
