This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

I have seen horses do that when cinched too tight, too fast. Seems to cut their air off or something. So sorry to hear he was hurt.
We didn’t get up momentum to go riding today either. :~\
No, it’s wood. In fact, I’ll probably need to repaint it too, when the house gets painted.

I’ll have to watch for the stallion. Wishing them well with him.
Hopefully, the horse market will rebound some here soon. It’s funny, ‘cause buyers are few and far between but when they show up, they pay the asking price. It’s just the odd ones who want a stallion for $1000 for a trail horse for their children...those I don’t even talk to :)
It’s a beautiful fence for wood. Maybe it will just need a touch up, in the pictures it looks great.

Good ole Dot, she is such a great horse. Should have brought her home with me. :)
Amy won the 58" and under pony class(4 showing), then went into the all breed halter and got the gate! We had to laugh at that. Here is this horse who stood 3rd in the Nation in Yearling gelding halter, and he loses to horses that could not hold a candle to him. No big deal, that is what you get at open shows.
His name is Hes Catchin Dreams This is the one Amy is finishing. He is only 3 yo and I think he will still grow. His rear is a lot higher then the front. He stands at 57 5/8" now.

Yep, open shows sometimes are a puzzle - you leave wondering where the judge got his card from. That horse really reminds me of Quest. He’s a gorgeous horse.
Saturday Frog and HaveFaith and I were supposed to go on an organized ride but due to the weather we decided not to chance it. Frog and HaveFaith went to the Mennonites and I stayed home and did yard work. I mowed all the yards and the small pasture and weed eated 3 acres of fence line. I was dead when I finished about 7:00 that night. I think I am getting to old for all that work, at least in one day. Next weekend I need to spray the fence lines with Roundup. Sunday, was indeed a day of rest for me! As it turned out the 60% showers that they projected did not materialize so it would have been a good day for a ride, but I am glad I got all that done.
Yeah - once in awhile you need to stop and get that stuff done. We spent yesterday up at the beach house, so we didn’t get anything done yesterday, but I have great plans for this week. The pasture is ready to be mowed, they’ve eaten all the good stuff, I need to rotate them to the back and mow the front.
Also have to do some house and stall cleaning.
The mowing sounds like more fun.

I mowed all day Sat. Was going to start weedeating today, but it is raining:(. So now to figure out what to do with my day.
We have been working on the small pasture, keeping the horses off of it and mowing and spraying for weeds. Last weekend I sprayed the whole pasture with Pasture Plus week killer and all of the weekds are yellow and all shrivled up. We did a soil sample and finally got the results back and the phos levels were off the page so the guy at the Co-Op said we need to put down 1 ton per acre of lyme then comeback in 4-6 weeks woth 30-0-6 fertilizer. Lyme is not to expensive. $30 per ton but the 30-0-6 is $510 per ton!
We’ve never done any soil testing or fertilizing here, and probably should, but I feel a little daunted by it. I mean... I don’t even know who to call to get four tons of lime delivered and spread.
We have a lot of weeds and undesirable grasses in the pasture that they won’t eat. We do pretty well just by mowing it a couple times a summer, but if it was mine, I’d try to figure out how to make it really better.
Since I can’t water it, it all dies by late summer anyway. I think a big part of keeping the desirable grass healthy would be the ability to water it.
