I hope the dog got the biatch by the throat. The concept of dogs feeling loss is not that far ‘fetched.’

And now for this important DOGGIEPING Announcement!

I've lost my list! I did a deep clean of my computer and I guess inadvertently deleted the folder I kept the ping list in.

If you were previously on my ping list and would still like to be on the list now, please let me know... I am re-building the list from scratch!

Why not post a special vanity thread in the news section telling people that you lost your doggie ping list and are trying to rebuild it? :)

Captain merriweather Lewis (of Lewis and Clark famae) purchased a full grown newfoundland dog at the public market in Philadelphia just before they left on their westward expedition.

He named the dog Seaman (for his expertise in the water, it is surmised) and they set off on their trek cross country.

Seaman walked all the way. One time he rescued members of the expedition when their canoe tipped over. Another time he saved them from a wild bear and from a herd of buffalo that was headed toward their campsite. Another time a band of Indians stole Seaman and wanted to keep him, but Capt. Lewis stood up to the Indians and demanded return of his “bear dog” as the Indians had named him.

A year, or so, after the famous expedition was completed and their report had been submitted to Thomas Jefferson, Captain Lewis died — either by his own hand, or from alchoholism. History is vague on that point.

History is NOT vague, however, on the point that Seaman, his beloved dog, lay down on Capt. Lewis’ grave and pined away for his master — refusing to move, or to eat, until he, too, had died. Loyal to the bitter end.
