MLB All-Star Weekend - Homerun Derby

Posted on 07/15/2008 7:34:37 AM PDT by frankiep

Did anyone see the Homerun Derby at Yankee Stadium last night? As a Mets fan I usually only watch National League teams, so I had only heard about Josh Hamilton's story and haven't really seen him in action. This guy is a beast though. I have never seen a display of power like the one he put on last night. And just think that he did it, and is in the middle of this incredible season he is having, after missing 3 full years and practically no time in the minors. Unbelieveable. The real life version of The Natural.

I also heard a different common tator say that (related to Hamilton’s profession of faith) that it was “a bad night to be an atheist.

I could just see Jesse Ventura throwing his TV.

Lance Berkman isn’t bad either. He’s also a very good person and role model for our young people. That says a lot in today’s professional sports business.

By all appearances, Josh Hamilton is conducting himself with grace and dignity. It is too bad that the trained communicators can not do as well as Josh.

Morneau basically admitted as much. He was heaping praise on Hamilton during an interview I heard earlier.

The commentary was awful, but yesterday was a good day for baseball overall. The home run derby was pretty fun to watch (compared to previous ones) and even the celebrity softball game (which I normally shut off after an inning or so) was entertaining.

You heard wrong. It was uber-liberal Peter Gammons

Thanks for the correction.

Just be clear though the quote is worded correctly, it is the attribution that is wrong.

Chris Buffoon Man wouldn't say something like that. Elitist snobs like Gammons and Reilly would.

I was watching the Home Run Derby last night and could not believe when one of the announcers commented when Morneau came up in the first round that there were too many “white guys” in the lineup. He complained that no Hispanics or blacks were represented in the lineup and actually questioned why Morneau was even invited.

Not only did Morneau happened to win the whole thing but the next batter up after Monreau was that other white guy, Hamilton who became their entire show.

Very disappointed in the coverage.

Anyone watching the All-Star Game, and the despicable "reception" our Red Sox players are getting from the (mostly) Yankee fan crowd? The booing, jeering and "overrated" chants to Papelbon are disgusting. What's their problem? Mariano Rivera is still coming out to close in the 9th.

Even more disgusting were the jeers and expletives hurled at Jonathan Papelbon and his pregnant wife Ashley during today's All-Star parade in NYC, according to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. They said Papelbon was very respectful in his comments to the NYC media about Mariano Rivera, and still Papelbon gets this appalling reaction from the NYC/Yankee fan crowd. Even former Yankee McCarver doesn't understand this crowd...

Yankee fans showed their true class today.

BTW: I'm so glad that ghetto stadium is being demolished.

One of the announcers actually said that last night? Do you remember who it was? (I only saw part of the Home Run Derby)

Peter Gammons' disgusting slam against Nancy Reagan pretty much did it for me... didn't watch too closely after that comment.

OK now Frankie Rodriguez (K-Rod) is closing... I thought Saint Mariano was to be the closer in the 9th...

I was at Yankee Stadium on the 5th of July with my 22 year old son thanks to my cousin who has season tickets to Yankee games. My cousin’s 11 year old son was also with us. During the game the couple behind us just kept on using the most profane language until my son turned to them to scold them over their behavior in the presence of a youngster. They simply got more profane.

When leaving the ballpark it was very congested. A very guttural Yankee fan loudly acclaimed to his fellow low-lifes, “Find me a Red Sox fan so I can piss on him”. Classy bunch they are.

I live in Maryland and often attend Red Sox games and Yankee games at Camden Yards. It is amazing the amount of addition security the stadium employs when the Yankees play there. Even with that the incidence of drunkenness and unacceptable behavior is markedly greater with their fans.

Here comes Saint Mariano now amid thundering applause and camera flashes. Wouldn't that be something if he blew it for the AL?

Hey, I may be a Red Sox fan, but I like Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and a few other Yankees. Can't stand A-Fraud, Shelly Duncan, Jaba, the Shambino (Giambi) and some others, but if the All-Star game was held at Fenway, and I was there, I wouldn't boo them... I'd just hold my applause.

Totally classless Yankee fans there tonight... geesh, now they're cheering "Let's Go Yankees!"

Hey Yankee fans: America is watching and - I can assure you - they're not liking what they're seeing.

Hey, we were there on the 4th and 5th of July! WAY UP in the upper-upper decks. We started the "Let's go Red Sox" cheers a couple of times... LOL. No profane language from us, though... ;-)

Josh Hamilton’s performance reminded me of Mark McGuire’s home runs in the 1999 Home Run Derby st Fenway Park.

Yes.

That was Peter Gammons. I thought it was a low cheap shot.

BTW: I'm so glad that ghetto stadium is being demolished.

If Yankee Stadium even remotely resembled its 1923 origins (ie the way Fenway Park and Wrigley Field still do), I would be the first to defend the place, but you're right -- the modern "historic" Yankee Stadium is just another ugly 1970s has-been of a baseball stadium.

That being said, I'm sure their new ball park -- and the new Mets' "City Field" will be beautiful...
