2008 CFN (College Football News) SEC Preview
College Football News ^ | 3 Aug 2008 | Pete Fiutak

Oh sure, there have been some legendary SEC coaches from Shug Jordan to General Neyland to The Bear, but when the 2008 season kicks off it’ll be the start of a new era of SEC football. Call it the renaissance or call it everyone keeping up in the arms race, but make no mistake about it, this is the greatest collection of college coaches to ever occupy one league at the same time.

Five of the coaches (Phil Fulmer, Steve Spurrier, Les Miles, Urban Meyer and Nick Saban) have won national titles, Tommy Tuberville did everything but win the national championship in 2004, and Mark Richt has been hanging around the national title ever since he took over at Georgia and has the team to break through this season. Rich Brooks, Houston Nutt, Sylvester Croom and Bobby Johnson are SEC veterans who have all fielded strong teams over the last few seasons.

Forget about the apprenticeships and the grace periods and the old college try, this is an all-star collection with several future hall-of-famers and crusty veterans who know everything there is to know about the SEC. They know all the talent, all the fan bases, and they’ve been through all the wars and have survived long enough to still have jobs in the more pressure packed of college conferences.

My Dad played center for LSU in the 30's.

He hated Neyland with a passion.

Always said that Neyland's Tennessee teams were the dirtiest players he ever faced.

Once I’m done reading all of the “Civil War” books I have lined up (or when I turn 40 whichever comes first) I’ll have to see if I can find a history of football in the SEC tome. It’d be something well worth reading IMO.

Once again, top to bottom, the best conference in the country. Period.

Skooz’s SEC Football Preview has been brought to you by: Skooz’s mom, proud birth mother of Skooz who hopes you have enjoyed this presentation; and

Mrs. Skooz, who lets Skooz play on the computer instead of mowing the lawn.

It was on the right hand side of the page that came up for me. I will try to see if it comes up again.

Okay, I think I know what that is...

That’s a randomly generated “sponsored links” portion and that’s not a CFN thing, it’s a Google thing. Google does that for a whole bunch of sites and I get B. Hussein links on there all of the time. If memory serves, if there’s any mention of the “Messiah” on your browser, Google’s generator on that page will figure it out and say “oh, here, this guy must be one of ‘those’”, ergo, the link.

At least that’s my best educated guess.

One Bold Prediction
Not only will Georgia not win the national title and not only will it not win the SEC, it’ll have to battle to win the East. While the team will be among the three best in America, things won’t go as expected because of three things: schedule, schedule, schedule. It’s asking way too much for anyone to get through unscathed at South Carolina, at LSU and at Auburn while hosting Alabama and Tennessee. Of course, there’s the Florida showdown to deal with, too..

I don't disagree with this. As tony Barnhart of the AJC said, right team, wrond year. Brutal schedule. I like auburn chances of beating UGA as they will be coming off 3 road games in a row including Florida and LSU.

Of course if your an Ohio State and Big Ten fan, you might as well declare all of the teams in the SEC national co-champions and be done with the season!

My Dad wasn't.

As for me, I lived outside of my native South for 33 years and finally returned 3 years ago.

I lived in Big 8 (now Big 12), Big 10 (actually 11) Big East and Ivy League.

Been to Colorado/Nebraska, Minnesota/Wisconsin, Michigan/Ohio State, Army/Navy, Yale/Harvard (Why they call it THE GAME is beyond me) games and was not impressed.

There is nothing like SEC football.

I would probably make the best SEC commissioner ever as I like every team in the SEC.

BTW - Vandy is looking for a pushover for their Homecoming game, think they can get Ohio State?

OK, I like some more than others.

But seriously, Southern and especially SEC football is a religion.

I still have my Sugar Bowl program from Alabama/Arkansas in 1961.

Catholic church doesn't do as well in the South because nobody would make Saturday Mass.

I know a girl who's Mother (make that her Mama) made her break up with her boyfriend because he did not wear a coat and tie to the 1966 Alabama/Auburn game.

I even subscribe to newspapers Saturday and Sunday editions in the Fall so I can read about SEC football.

Newspapers in the North, Midwest, West don't cover football like Southern papers. Even the liberal rags do a great job. The local rag here has a special edition Thursday before the season that has a section each for high school, College and Pro teams.

Hell's Belles, the local high school in Lakeland has a Jumbotron scoreboard.

I went to school at The Citadel and still followed SEC football since The Cid only played possum football - Played dead at home and got killed on the road.

Getting back to Tennessee, Dad hated them but some of his best stories were from those games.

Top to bottom in the SEC, how does any school manage to get through the season undefeated?

Exactly! OSU needs to hope all the SEC teams beat each other up...again.

Yep — I am an OSU alum that now lives in the southland.
Nothing in the Big Ten resembles the vibrance and intensity of Saturday game day in the SEC.

Some of my best books are my Dad's college yearbooks, 1933-1937, and The Fighting Tigers I and II.

Have you ever been to an SEC game?

You "FEEL" the experience when you get within 10 miles of the stadium and it builds all the way to kick-off.

Then it gets crazy!
