The hostess with the moosest (Palin)
The Corner (National Review Online) ^ | 8-30-08 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 08/30/2008 4:42:45 AM PDT by Renfield

Over in the Frumistan province of the NR caliphate, our pal David is not happy about the Palin pick. I am - for several reasons.

First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can't be in Senator Obama's interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans' vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats' presidential one.

Third, real people don't define "experience" as appearing on unwatched Sunday-morning talk shows every week for 35 years and having been around long enough to have got both the War on Terror and the Cold War wrong. (On the first point, at the Gun Owners of New Hampshire dinner in the 2000 campaign, I remember Orrin Hatch telling me sadly that he was stunned to discover how few Granite State voters knew who he was.) Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain't run nothin' but his mouth. She's done the stuff he's merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party's corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol (see his campaign's thuggish attempt to throttle Stanley Kurtz and Milt Rosenberg on WGN the other night).

Fourth, Governor Palin has what the British Labour Party politician Denis Healy likes to call a "hinterland" - a life beyond politics. Whenever Senator Obama attempts anything non-political (such as bowling), he comes over like a visiting dignitary to a foreign country getting shanghaied into some impenetrable local folk ritual. Sarah Palin isn't just on the right side of the issues intellectually. She won't need the usual stage-managed "hunting" trip to reassure gun owners: she's lived the Second Amendment all her life. Likewise, on abortion, we're often told it's easy to be against it in principle but what if you were a woman facing a difficult birth or a handicapped child? Been there, done that.

Fifth, she complicates all the laziest Democrat pieties. Energy? Unlike Biden and Obama, she's been to ANWR and, like most Alaskans, supports drilling there.

A wonderful post! I am so excited about Sarah as the VP pick. I didn’t know anything about her but from everything that I have seen, heard and read, wow! My husband and I were talking this this morning. He said he wondered if McCain wins, he dies in office and then we have the first woman President. I was more, McCain wins and then in 4 years, he goes only 1 term and we have Palin vs Hillary!
What a race!

Dang! I've been reading about her for quite some time on FR but here she finally is - nice job, John. In fact, since the RAT rabble has decided to run a no experience niwit, how 'bout the pubbies shove McCain from the top slot and put in this Amazon-American for a new and improved Palin-McCain ticket?

Bonus article feature: Senator Obama ain't run nothin' but his mouth.

We must repeat this endlessly until election day.

A woman who's had 5 kids, has all kinds of real life experience ("hockey mom" stuff--you know, Dems, like all those poor, poor middle class folks you claim to love) as well as anti-corruption and domestic agenda experience, has no foreign policy experience. We cop to that.

But Obama--neither do you, and you're at the top of the ticket.

Thanks, NY.

I love it. She's real and doesn't need to pretend to be something she's not.

This election will decide if America still exists or will exist down the raod.
You have 2 choices.

An American War Hero and an American Female Pioneer Hero
vs
A Communist Wannabe and a career Socialist
Common sense suggests that the election is over and the result should be Heroes 85 percent Zeroes 15 percent. However I no longer have that much faith in the American citizenry.
Far too many have fallen under the spell of Nanny Government and like the idea of someone else being responsible for everything in their lives.
So the question is. Are there still more real Americans then new age Socialist Americans and will we see America continue forward from this point or simply slide into the oblivion of one world socialism................

There is no bad news about Gov.Palin.

Hubby is HOT!!
& Bill Clinton he’s NOT!!

McCain is obviously impressed by and thrilled with Gov. Palin - he had this huge, genuine smile on his face throughout Sarah’s speech.

The best part of this new ‘partnership’ is not having old grudges and slights tainting their campaign. It’s like going to work and bonding with new colleagues - you share your life’s stories and plans for the future - not old feuds and animosity.

I love it!

No foreign policy experience? Hah! You've been sipping on the 'RAT/MSM Kool-Ade.

Alaska borders Russia. Governor Palin has actually been involved with Alaskan/Russian issues.

I had a neighbor yesterday who's an Obama supporter who almost had a stroke when I told him Obama was a Marxist.

They just are so damned blind to their politics.

Fortunately the clinton base are not united with Barry and they do not like him at all.

I went over to a couple of dem sites for hillary this morning to take a look. There is lots of real anger out there. They are going to either sit out the election or vote for McCain.

That will help the cause greatly.

Please cram the "RAT Kool-Ade" BS--Governors do not engage in foreign policy.

In addition to her local and AK State governance - she pointed out her experience as CinC of AK’s National Guard & her son’s military committment Do we know yet if BO registered as required by law?

BO will make some stupid comment about the National Guard at some point. He has made so many gaffes, and so many stupid off-the-cuff “Well, uh, umm, errr” lines that bomb, I just know he’ll say something demeaning about her accomplishments. Remember how condescending he was to Hillary in the primary.

Governors do not engage in foreign policy.

Governors of border states routinely meet with their foreign counterparts on matters of common interest.
