Yeah, get it while it’s “Free” before AT&T finally follows Verizon, Time Warner and Comcast and puts a cap on your downloads.

I just got an iPhone - makes all the others “smart phones” seem like stoneage implements.

What a fascinating little machine, and now with more hot spots available for free makes it even more fun.

I assume “free” means free for AT&T customers?

At least for iPhone users... who have to be AT&T to get full functionality.

I was just clarifying, since as a Ma-Bell DSL user I get access to their WiFi hotspots for free. Everybody else has to pay. This article made it sound like AT&T was making their WiFi free all around.

So they are extending the free use to AT&T Wireless customers. I figured that they would of already done that.

that is good to know. I had been getting the data package for my cell phone I think it 19 dollars. I can tether it to my laptop, of course you dont tell them that, you are suppose to get laptop connect which is 50 dollars i think. but laptop connect does give you the option to use the wifi spots.

Is there software that enables tethering an iphone to a laptop? I thought Apple killed this.

Probably a driver so the OS can see it as a modem? How could Apple kill that if anybody can write a driver for it?

Looks like Apple has decided they will not be allowing any tethering applications in the AppStore. As such, NetShare will not be available in the iTunes AppStore. We are seeing a lot of similar reports from various developers who's applications were abruptly removed and banned from the AppStore without any violations of the terms of service. This is all unfortunate news for the iPhone platform end-users.

From nulltiver.com developers of Netshare, software that allows tethering but banned from the Apple store because it took away from AT&T's sales of laptop connect cards.

I tried getting hooked up with AT&T wifi when I got my iPhone. The deal was in Austin TX that you had to buy a plastic card with whatever amount of $ in it you wanted. Like a gift card. You could use the money to buy ‘whatever’ at starbucks. On the card was a number. You supposedly logged onto AT&T, typed in the number and that was it. Yeah, right.

Three pages of questions. They wanted to know all my personal info. I sent them an obscene message instead. Effing scum bags!

What’s to keep NetShare from selling outside the Apple Store or being free for that matter?

As far as I know, iphone applications are only downloadable through the Appstore.

With an un-hacked iPhone, you can only load applications from the Apple Store. This is a security feature to prevent rogue applications from causing problems. The good news is that there are TONS of applications in the Apps Store, most of them free, and some are almost staggeringly good.

It is possible to “jailbreak” your iPhone so you can load apps from elsewhere. But this risks your warranty and can cause problems at firmware-update time. Still, many hardy souls do it. It’s one way to get Netshare or a similar app installed if you really need it.

Back to the topic of AT&T providing free WiFi to iPhone users: Note that the instructions AT&T has provided talk about connecting your iPhone to the AT&T hotspot. What isn’t clear is whether you can connect the laptop you’re carrying. The connection link is sent to you as an SMS; not sure how you’d get that to your laptop or if the hotspot would object if you did. I’ll have to try it.

Of course, traveling with my iPhone with its superb little browser and email client means I have far less need to connect my laptop, but sometimes I still must.
