Last Friday morning when I got to the office, I found that my computer had the infamous Microsoft Blue Screen of Death. I tried rebooting, but the SCSI card got no response from my boot drive. This wasn't a huge problem, because I had already intended to upgrade my system drive and already had my data partitions copied to the new drive. After a little work I was able to restore a recent enough backup of my system drive to my new system drive and get the computer runing again.
My problem now is how do I destroy the data that still exists on the hard drive platters so they can't be read and recovered by anyone else even someone with access to a clean room who could fix the drive well enough to read any data that still exists on them. I've considered using my bulk eraser to erase the data that still exists and then using an electric drill to put holes in the platters.

Take the old hard drive and put it into a microwave for 5 seconds. That will destroy all of the data.

Explosives, or a heavy-caliber weapon.
Get ranch dressing, mix in some croutons, add a little bacon bits, put your hardrive ontop, and have a salad with a side of salmon.

Hey, if you’ve got data that valuable, why was it sitting on a computer that someone could pick up and walk away with?
Seriously, going a bit overboard here. If you’re really up for the extra effort, go have a nice bonfire in the backyard, put a couple logs on, stick the drive on, give it a few minutes for the plastic to cook off, then pop open a nice beer and call the game done there.

Take it apart. Its about 15 or so screws, some of which may be the “star” kind. Then remove the platter and bend it over with a hammer a couple of times. The data can never be recovered.

...Then you can take it out and use it for target practice with your large caliber guns, and then your medium caliber, and then the small caliber.
That's what the bulk eraser is. I'm just unsure of how effective it is.

Stune it. But good.
