The Rail Runner is very popular here in NM. Another Saturday train was added just yesterday. Why, you may ask.

The reason is that you can go on a 200-mile round trip (from Belen to Santa Fe and return) for as little as $6.00 total!! Every time the state adds another train, it loses more money. Farebox recovery is only 10% or less. And Santa Fe is a city where you can walk around but if you don't want to, the taxpayers pay for free shuttles to go from the station to the Palace of the Governors where you can buy trinkets from the Indians out in front.

So for cheap entertainment, you can get the all the kids and mama onto the train for less than the cost of a Super-sized Big Mac. A bargain for the riders (and tourists who would have to pay to park in Santa Fe) but a big drain on the local taxpayers.

Don't worry, they'll make it up on volume!

but wait, if they lose 90% on each passenger, wouldn't that ... shut up, shut up, shut up; don't confuse me with facts

Glad you called it to my attention. This is one visitor who will take advantage of that ride... LOL...

Gotta say it does sound like a good day's entertainment-nice train ride to Santa Fe, and back after a day of fooling around with the artsy fartsies and the cigar store Indians...too bad it's on the taxpayers' nickel though. That's not right..
