SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.—A San Bernardino man wielding an 8-foot-long chunk of lumber has been shot to death by a police officer.

Sgt. Dave Dillon says 47-year-old Penimina Sue had threatened his family Wednesday night and also threatened an officer with the piece of wood. The officer tried first to subdue the man with a Taser stun gun but it had no effect.

Dillon says the family called police because Sue was throwing items around the house and threatening to hurt people.

Was the taser not in working order or something? I can't imagine anyone could not be subdued by tens of thousands of volts of electricity.

I know for a fact that if a perp is hopped up on certain types of drugs a tazer will not take him down.

Don't ask me how I know, just take my word that I was there and saw it happen.

15 years is 45 feet. Thats probably 4-5 seconds for most people. Thats plenty of time.

The 21 foot rule is 2 seconds for most people.

There are various reasons a taser wouldn't have an effect... the most common is drugs. I have seen some mountain-sized men brought to their knees and made to cry like a baby with one.

The alternative is that the Taser wasn't functioning.

It’s time to ban 2 X 4s!

But then...if we ban 2 X 4s, only outlaws will have 2 x 4s!

Tasers won’t have any effect if they don’t penetrate all the way through clothing and reach the skin.

Anyone with even a precursory training in Aikido (for example) could do that.

I suspect hand to hand training is not emphasized so much in police officer training these days.

Hey, good thinking slick.

Since California has more combat vets in Iraq and Afghanistan, maybe you'll get your wish and something will happen to them too.

You really ought to keep your stupid ass juvenile comments to yourself.

You are living proof, not all idiots are in California.

"(Boy Named Sue)"

"Son, this world is rough
and if a man's gonna make it
he's got to be tough
and I knew I wouldn't be there to help you along,

So I give you that name and I said goodbye
and I knew you'd either have to get tough or die,
and it's that name that helped to make you strong..."

With apologies to Johnny Cash.

no. it isn't. for good reason. if someone is close enough to fight you hand to hand, then they are close enough to grab your club, your mase, your gun.

if you're a cop, you don't have to fight fair, but you do have to win.

anyone who says a 2x4 isn't a dangerous instrument capable of causing serious physical injury or death is an idiot. imho, of course.

I'll bet I could do that.

It's called a "street fight."

We used to have them all the time when I was a kid.

Now that every cop and gang banger is running around with a piece, we've forgotten how to give a good old-fashioned @ss-kicking.

Sheesh, a guy wielding a 2x4 (it appears to be) is now considered so dangerous as to warrant using deadly force?

A 2x4, a stick, a curtain rod or a baseball bat can all very easily be deadly weapons.

I worked in a Correctional Institution and a Hospital ER.I have seen berserkers shot with tasers, sprayed with all sorts of chemical agents and hit in the head with a baton and still keep coming.
